Conroe Unveiled
By Michael Santo

I’ve been telling my friends, don’t buy a PC yet. Wait for Conroe, or Core, Intel’s new architecture! Most waited, some did not. At 9:01PM PDT, the NDAs all expired and tons of reviews started showing up on the web. They all agreed that Intel has a winner here.
Some quotes:
After a long gestation period, Intel has successfully delivered on its promise of substantially faster CPUs that use significantly less power. For the near term, Core 2 looks like the must-have CPU for enthusiast and mainstream user alike. Source: ExtremeTech
Clock-for-Clock, the Core 2 Duo E6700 and Core 2 Extreme X6800 are faster than any other desktop processor currently available. Source: Hot Hardware
Regardless of what happens with its competition, though, the big story here is that Intel has replaced its troubled Netburst microarchitecture with a world-beater. Source:The Tech Report
We Say: So how will AMD respond? It’s already a sure thing that price cuts are in order, and there’s the 4×4. But is that enough or does AMD have something powerful to fire back with? Time will tell.

- “prices are excellent”?? as compared to what, platinum??
“the Core 2 Duo E6700, which runs at 2.66GHz and will cost approximately $530, and the Core 2 Extreme X6800, which clocks at 2.93GHz and is priced at $999. (These are prices for quantity 1,000.)”
- yea, I’m sure this is the beginning of the end for AMD.

ValuedCustomer - These prices are excellent for the performance you’re getting out of them. Review… a $530 processor is routinely beating AMD’s $1000+ processor. Now the these are not the only 2 processors coming out of Intel. The Core 2 Duo E6400 will be $224 and the E6300 will be $183.
With the benchmarks being where they are, I would suspect that at even at the 200 dollar level AMD is gonna have a tough time competing on the basis that their better than their goliath counterpart.

This is why AMD is planning on dropping the prices of its chips by about 50% in some cases later this month. Conroe being released at this pricing level is great news for consumers no matter which side of the AMD-Intel table you’re on.

ValuedCustomer says:
those quoted prices are bulk-rate (at least 1000) - tack on another 25% and then you’d be looking at retail.

Yep the AMD price dropping is a great thing. But we’re getting to the state of the market we had quite a few years ago. If you wanted a great processor at a very good price get an AMD. If you want an even better processor at a slightly higher price then get a Core 2.
I’m gonna guess that a lot of enthusiests in the need for a upgrade to what their using,(I am using an Athlon XP 2800+, and am looking to upgrade) will find very compelling choices from either side.
Oh and we really don’t know where the pricing will land in the upcoming months for the Core 2. Sure there will be markup, but guessing how high isn’t gonna get you anywhere. We’ll just have to wait and see. But those that are buying computers from OEM (especially Tier 1) will be getting better performance per dollar since they do buy in bulk.

ValuedCustomer, I actually find that the price of processors from an online retailer is usually very, very close to the bulk price straight from AMD if not sometimes even lower.
