FreeScale Announces Mram Chips, Available in Quantity

Companies, including IBM, have been pursuing this technology, magnetoresistive random-access memory (Mram), for years, but FreeScale is the first to be able to produce it in quantity. Reports are that FreeScale has been building up stock in an Arizona plant for two months. Unlike Flash RAM, which also does not require power to maintain data, Mram does not degrade as it’s reused and it is also faster to read and write.

“This is the most significant memory introduction in this decade,” said Will Strauss, an analyst with research firm Forward Concepts. “This is radically new technology. People have been dabbling in this for years, but nobody has been able to make it in volume.” Source: BBC News

We Say: A spokesperson for FreeScale indicated the company already has a customer list, but declined to name any. I say, bring it on! Let’s see some real usage of this, though I’m not clear on how cost will compare to Flash RAM.
