Inflight Power Charger Tops Off Electronics Using an Airplane’s Headphone Jack
By Alice Hill
RealTechNews
This is one of those ultra-useful or ultra-unnecessary products depending on how much you fly. The Inflight power charger uses the electricity from an airplane seat’s headphone jack to charge any electronics that power up via a USB connection. This means that a) you need to have a device(s) that can be charged via USB or b) buy a set of charging tips and that c) you have some time to spend re-charging. It takes 3-5 minutes to charge one minute on your device. For long flights, it’s not a bad idea especially if you don’t want to haul around another charger.
The Inflight Power cable uses an internal trickle charger that takes 3-5 min to fully charge, then outputs power to the attached device (phone, music player etc). It does this repeatedly, thus the cable charges the attached device every 3-5 minutes for 1 minute or less. Plug compatible with any standard USB charging cable. The Inflight USB Power unit plugs into the passenger seat audio jack and outputs regulated power to the attached USB charging cable/connector. Price:$34.99 Product Page: Inflight Power via Daily Tech
We Say: Definitely handy to have in your bag, but it’s also another charger to carry around. You also have to have the volume cranked, which makes me wonder what would happen if the whole plane started using these?

KC says:
Are airplane phone jacks proprietary? By the look of the cable, it should work with any headphone outlet.

Alice says:
That’s interesting. So you could power up one device from the headphone jack of another?

Good point. You could charge an iPod with it’s own headphone jack.
Brilliant!

It’s been several years since I was on a flight with the headphone jack, but I’m going to assume they haven’t gone around and changed anything.
They’re SLIGHTLY different from normal headphone jacks. How else are they going to sell their $4 headphones if you could use your own?

The headphone jack is different in an airplane.
However, you can buy an adaptor to use your own headphones for less than $4.
They don’t sell you those $4 headphones because it is the only option, they sell them because they *can* at $4 a pop. Unprepared flyers make great add-on profit.

allen says:
The jacks on every flight I’ve been on have been a split standard size jack. Instead of stereo mini jack it’s two mono’s that the airline headphones plug into for stereo. What’s real cute is the little adapter you can buy/sometimes included on airline headphones that just turns the two mono’s into a normal stereo signal for your regular old headphones.

Charlie says:
Ok, let me answer a few questions here.
BJ, You’re an idiot. Of course you can’t charge your ipod with your ipod. Have you ever taken a high school science class? That’s like saying that you could drink your own urine and stay hydrated forever…..stupid.
Peter, there is no such thing as a proprietary headphone jack on any plane. There are 3 different types of jack, and if you have an adapter, you can use all 3.

Alice says:
Most seats I’ve seen have a plain old standard headphone jack - at least my headphones always seem to work. But what about the fact that half the jacks are broken or crackly - wonder if that gives you less of a charge or nothing at all.
June 15th, 2006 at 3:51 pm
Tony says:
Haha, olde style air tube jacks!
These days some airlines have dual 1/8″ headphone jacks; by that I mean one jack is the left ear, the other is the right. Air Canada gives those headphones out for free. You can also plug in your own pair.

perpetual motion lol says:
I flew on Continental recently and they were giving the headphones away. They were placed on your seat along with the pillow and blanket and notes said to save them for your next flight. I know other airlines used to sell them so I don’t know if others have changed.
So, about the jack they use - it is the same size as your mini headphone jack except its mono and there are two of them, about an inch apart, one for each channel. If you use your own headphones without an adapter you’ll hear sound in only one ear.

Alice says:
I fly American and get stereo with the one plug, but I have seen the 2 plug version on other planes. Bring back the plastic air tubes - now that was high fidelity.
June 15th, 2006 at 4:20 pm
Alex says:
Every flight I’ve been on in the last 5 years has used a standard headphone jack. I know this because until I bought an iPod, I was using a set of Sony MDR-V600’s with the onboard audio on every flight. The few times when headphones were not provided, they were available either free by request, or for a nominal fee (50¢ to $1). This is on about 5 different US based airlines. I remember the double jack connector, but I haven’t seen it since high school. It may be that airlines with older fleets or who haven’t remodeled the interiors of their planes still have nonstandard jacks (like the double connector), but if so, they’re not the majority anymore.
Another thing to consider: many newer planes have a jack in the armrest which is designed to provide power. You can get something like an iGo Juice model universal charger which will plug into this socket as well as almost anything else you could want (car cigarette lighter, wall socket, etc). That will charge faster and let you charge larger objects (like laptops).
June 15th, 2006 at 4:33 pm
jeffg says:
This is total BS. Most airlines use tubing powered headphones which are powered by air. It is much less costly to do it this as the tubes provide a cheaper way to sell the headphones. The speaker is in the armrest and very small which is peizo electric. Unless this device can convert air to electricity, it is useless…

Jeffg,
In the years of flying that I have been flying I have seen 3 types of music jacks on aircraft, the first is the air jack that you are talking about, those are now very rare. The next is the 2 mono plugs, these are a bit more active in the fleet but they are mostly being retired to (this device would most likely work with those with an adapter). These days I mostly see the standard headphone jack. A few airlines still try to sell the headphones, but most don’t anymore.

I can’t believe you all keep calling them “air powered” headphones. There is no air blowing, there is no air moving at all. It’s just a speaker playing into the other end of the tube, not a fan.

All this bickering is clearly a sign that the terrorists finally have won. When the tech geeks can’t prevent a small advance like this from drawing and converting, we are surely doomed when the devices are designed to use the plane’s own electrical system against it…

Dear Annoyed;
Of course there’s air moving, you dope. How do you think your ears work? By air moving in and out at freq’s between 20 and 20K Hz. It’s not “blowing” but it’s damn sure moving.
June 15th, 2006 at 6:16 pm
Alice says:
I called them air tubes because you can bend them in half and the sound stops = like you cut off the air. Haven’t seen those on any carrier for years, in any country, even Africa.
Here is my theory on headsets and flying:
When Sept 11 happened, they used to give out headsets for free to the people flying and essentially stopped charging for movies. Then I noticed that they stopped selling the “movie” but sold you the headset - which was a way to inch back some profit into in-flight movies and also skip collecting headsets at the end of the flight. Smart. But maybe because we all have headsets, it was just a losing battle - do you run up and down the aisle shrieking and trying to catch people who used the headphone jack? Or do you sell the people who forgot a headset a new cheapie set and make a buck?
Question: Why don’t the airlines sell chargers and iPods and make some real $$$. The lame crap in the duty free catalog is a waste, and domestic flyer forget chargers and MP3 players all the time. Serve drinks and then give people a deal on a video iPod (maybe pre-loaded with some movies and music) and a Netflix coupon and boom - no more airline troubles. Just stop peddling the overpriced junk in the catalog and do a true on-board bargain for those who forgot books and have to kill time.

um… well i’m guessing this uses a charge pump voltage doubler circuit. its not that bad depending on the number of stages
you can go from 1 vpp to 100 vpp with modest current.
basically you take the oscillating audio range signal and dump the charge onto a circuit that does an ac/dc conversion but doubles the voltage, you can cascade these and generate enough current to charge small devices…. its not really that impossible…
they’ve charged cell phones off of ambient 802.11 energy with an antenna before……

air-tube headphones - I even remember airplanes
that you could open the windows, yea stick you
hand outside the airplane
What makes me mad is, now your lucky to get a
soda, on top of that the seats are smaller, and
every flight I am on, ant got no TV, no headphone
jacks, no power jacks, nothing, zip, nada
I have to use a PDA and a battery extender, to watch
movies, - I could use a laptop - except the batterys
dont last for more than 2-3 hours
And I would not doubt the MPAA will hunt me down and
kill me for converting my DVD movies to play on my PDA
even tho I paid and arm and a leg for each DVD
Oh well I guess thats progress for you

There are only 2 ‘’types'’ of headphone jacks. The standard one you see everywhere and the standard one that is doubled up (2 mono channels, one to each ear)
The charger would work on both systems but would (I imagine) only provide half the current on a double plug as a conventional 1 pluggers.

I fly weekly. The headset jack is standar. That is how Bose and Sony and the others sell their noise cancelling headphones. if you do buy the $2 version the airline sells(Delta anyway) you can use them in any other electronic device as well. the question I have is on the seats that do have the two plugs (it is only one jack but uses an adapter on the headphones) can you put one of these trickle chargers in each?
