Amazon.com Enters the Online Grocery Business
By Michael Santo

One of the biggest failures of the dot-com boom was Webvan. I remember when it was around, my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) used it … but only to buy, at a discount, BART tickets, which they happily delivered (I’m sure at a loss). Amazon.com has started selling groceries on their website, though only non-perishable goods.
The service is limited to non-perishable goods such as cereal, pasta and canned soup, but Amazon can ship those items to any customer, unlike online grocers that only deliver to limited areas. “Because we only carry products when we can offer great prices and free shipping, we don’t carry everything (yet!),” the company said in a notice on its Web site (http://www.amazon.com). We Say: I have to say I was amazed when I clicked through and the first item I chose was eligible for Free Super Saver Shipping.
Can they succeed? Well, I have to say that if anyone can make it work, at least in my opinion, it would be Amazon.com.
Note: the link to Amazon DOES NOT generate revenue for the writer or this site.

Considering amazon shipments to Australia (even on express) take a minimum of 6 weeks, and anywhere up to 6 mths (yes, I’ve received something I totally forgot I’d ordered from amazon), and usually go via germany (go figure!). I’m thinking this new service is erm, unappetising to say the least

Webvan was great but nothing could compare to Kozmo.com You ordered what you wanted and an hour later someone delivered it. Too bad they had such a lousy business model. I’ve used Safeway.com and Albertsons.com and like both of their delivery services.

We use Peapod (Stop and Shop) pretty frequently. It’s well worth the delivery fee to not spend 2 hours on weekly shopping when it’s a tight week. But you need to be able to get perishables with your groceries. Not to mention ice cream and cool whip. Plus, I can’t imagine that amazon would do well shipping 59 cent cans of beans to you ……

With a trip in the works, an idea occured to me that if your going on a long term vacation, you could order groceries before you left so that they would be waiting when you got to your destination. Thats assuming that there is someplace secure for the package to be delivered to such as a front desk or a hotel/resort manager.
