Peekvid, Keepvid Let Users Rip Videos from YouTube

Oh, oh. Every time something new comes along (OK, OK, not every time), especially if it has a use in terms of sharing … oh, say, music, or videos, or ? … there’s a way to exploit it in a way the MPAA probably isn’t going to appreciate. Keepvid and Peekvid are services run by two people in Australia (BTW, the sites are really slow … at least when I went to them to confirm their URLs) that allow ripping and aggregating not just from YouTube but also from Google Video and other sites.

Thus, though YouTube prohibits anyone except legitimate rights holders–such as NBC Universal, EMI Records and many others–from uploading copyrighted content to its site, such content does get posted illegally, and these sister services make it possible to easily view, and download, a wide variety of such content. “None of the videos on Peekvid are hosted by us,” Joshua, one of two people in western Australia who run the service and sister site Keepvid, said in an instant message interview. “We do not condone uploading of copyright(ed) material by illegitimate copyright holders. Peekvid is simply a more organized index of some of YouTube’s videos.” Source: News.com

Joshua also has an interesting take on YouTube, in that he feels that YouTube wouldn’t be a big player if it wasn’t for hosting some copyrighted content.

And YouTube itself doesn’t think that Peekvid is doing anything wrong.

“Peekvid is streaming content by embedding the videos, which they have the right to do,” said Julie Supan, YouTube’s senior director of marketing. “We’re going to review the site to ensure that the videos that they are pointing to that are being streamed are in fact from legitimate rights holders…A lot of these links are going to be dead soon, that’s for sure.” Source: News.com

We Say: So, while it looks, at least to YouTube, that Peekvid is OK, Keepvid, according to Joshua, is to be “a tool which people can use to download videos from streaming Web sites.” Legal or illegal, these sites are sure to garner more attention (both good and bad) as they become more popular.

YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.

YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.

Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.
