Google Comes Out for Net Neutrality

By Jimmy Daniels
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews

Google co-founder and President Sergey Brin has come out for Net Neutrality, saying that the only way to have a fast lane on the information super highway, one that people will pay extra for, is if we have a slow lane, which is one of the most common sense looks at Net Neutrality yet.

Google co-founder and President Sergey Brin met with U.S. lawmakers Tuesday to press for legislation that would prevent Internet access providers from charging Web sites more for faster content delivery.

Brin acknowledged large companies such as Google would be able to cut deals with the network owners to get their content through. But he added that Google searches are only valuable if consumers can then quickly access the sites listed in the results.

“The thesis is that some content providers will pay for premium service. Why are they paying? Just because they feel charitable toward the telcos and ISPs?” Brin asked. “I assume they are paying because otherwise they would have worse performance, or maybe it won’t really work.”

The U.S House of Representatives may vote as early as this week on a telecommunications reform bill that does not include the Net neutrality protection sought by Google. Source: News.com.

We Say: eBay is prompting their community to fight for Net Neutrality by giving them an easy way to submit form letters to their local House of Representative and Senators. Submit yours and let your lawmakers know how you feel.

Very disengenuous. What if there was a very fast lane and a fast lane? Slower is relative. Why should all trafic have to be treated the same? If Google has bandwidth intensive content that they want to insure reaches their customers and not be slowed down or chopped up due to congestion then perhaps they should be willing to pay more to insure that outcome. I know I’m not going to pay more than I do for broadband just to see Yahoo’s or Google’s high bandwidth premium content….and if I do pay for premium content from a provider, then I damn well hope that they are doing whatever is necessary to get the content to my ISP so that my viewing experience is not downgraded. If “doing whatever is necessary” involves them paying a fee to insure priority handling then they should do that. Someone has got to pay more for all this video that they want to push down the pipe and it sure as hell ain’t gonna be me.

That’s a pretty niave comment. Do you think that the content providers are going to shrug their shoulders and pay the telcos and ISP out of their own profits? No, any increased cost is going to be passed along to you the consumer.

I might be behind having a priority traffic mechanism if the the service providers would give us any idea how it might work. Right now, all I hear is that they want to charge Google and E-Bay more because they are making money on the Internet.

Stephen, it sure as hell is going to be you that pays for the “fast lane”. You think any big company is going to take a hit to their margin so you can enjoy content streaming in the fast lane?

    Guess… again…

Honestly, anyone who has ever run a website of any kind knows that a “content provider” pays for their bandwidth in the first place. What companies like AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon want to do is put up toll bridges. They want websites to pay extra for the “privilege” of allowing your website to be accessed by people using their service.

Imagine, if you will, that you run a wildly popular website. Imagine that you’ve paid your host or service provider for a sweet OC-48 pipe to allow you enough bandwidth to serve up some really awe inspiring content. Now imagine that AT&T calls you up and says “We noticed you’re running a website. It’s such a popular site, it would be a shame if something were to happen to your bandwidth.”

Think about that for a moment. Sounds like extortion to me, but that’s exactly what they want to do. Meanwhile, they’re going to pull a bait-and-switch scam on the end-users. Sure you can get the 8Mbps broadband connection, but you’ll only get that extra speed that you’re paying for when you’re accessing sites that have paid their extortionary fees. I doubt that many sites will be willing to pay the bandwidth protection money, but you’ll still have to pay for that 8Mbps you wanted, whether you can actually use it or not.

This is a comment about the architecture of the internet; to bad we don’t have an explanation of why he said it. But then that might be giving away the secretes of Google. Hmmm
