Google Develops Web-Based Spreadsheet

By Michael Santo
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews

It was the first killer app for personal computers. It was the spreadsheet, pioneered by VisiCalc and VisiCorp. On Tuesday, Google will launch a limited trial of a web-based spreadsheet. It will support up to 10 simultaneous users, and as usual, it will be free.

Google Spreadsheet is one of a string of user productivity applications that Google has been testing, including the Writely word processing application it acquired earlier this year and its internally developed Google Calendar.

Users interested in experimenting with the application can go to Google Labs (http://labs.google.com/) to sign up on Tuesday. An undisclosed number of users can join the initial trial phase on a first-come, first-served basis, it said. Source: Reuters

We Say: I worked on the innards of a spreadsheet, including the recomputation engine, for 10 years once. I’ll be interested in trying to get into the trial and putting it through its paces.

Applications for trials are being taken here.

Great. Let’s all buy into this “web service” garbage, and before you know it we’ll all be renting our software just like Google and MS’s Bill Gates would like it.

Just say “NO!” to web services.

I think its a great idea, right up there with writely. I jump around between computers and hate having to transfer things, being able to work on them online and have others easily collaborate helps keep me productive, especially if I’m not at work, or on the road.

Everyone keeps missing the point and losing focus with Google. Everything they do is ultimately part of their plan to sell ads. Google is an ADVERTISING company.

Now you are going to get targeted ads based on your documents and spreadsheets. This just makes the ads more valuable to the advertisers as they are getting more exposure and therefore Google can charge more or keep prices where they are.

It is an intersting business theory and I am suprised we haven’t seen articels about it yet, but thats mostly because everyone keeps missing the point. Instead of lowering prices to compete, you raise the value of the service. Brilliant.

This is a good idea, and if Google makes it a low price subscription service, it will be GOLD. but ads will drive folks off.
