IE7+ Version to Spotlight Vista’s Browser Over XP’s

IE7

Although the codebase used to compile the different versions of IE7 are the same, the version of the browser provided in Vista will have a slightly different name, meaning “Internet Explorer 7+”. Aside from Vista-only features, provided by the OS, such as Protected Mode, Parental Controls, and improved Network Diagnostics, there are no differences between the two browsers.

There are no feature differences between IE7 and IE7+ beta 2 other than the ones I mentioned above; we have, however, fixed a bunch of bugs between the two releases. As always, I’d love to hear your feedback on this naming as well as the product. We’ll have more information on how to sign up for Windows Vista beta 2 with IE7+ shortly, but for now, you can download the IE7 beta here. Source: Microsoft’s IEBlog

We Say: Cynical types like me will wonder if the + stands for more features, more protection, or more vulnerabilities. :-)

Each version of Windows is purported to be faster than the previous version and I personally believe that this has never been the case. Microsoft also claims each time that there are other salient reasons to upgrade to the newer version and I feel likewise about those reasons. For instance, since these days, all they seem to be able to provide is useless eye candy as upgrade incentives, I predict that Vista is going to be an unprecedented flop. And this IE7+ idiocy (withholding features from the XP version of IE7) is a perfect example of Microsoft’s cheapskate mentality. It’s just like the way they artificially limited FAT32 partition sizes with XP, even though you can get around that stupidity by using the partitioning software that most hard drive manufacturers offer.

If Microsoft would simply do a better job of listening to the end user, and stop insulting the intelligence of the public, they might actually be able to come up with a good OS. However, since they’re motivated by greed, that’s not going to happen.

Times like this, I want to cheer on the idea of computer as appliance. The faster that happens, imo, the sooner we can ditch this tired idea of an “operating system” and just get on with life.

I’ve been using Windows/DOS for fourteen years. I am older now, but they seem older still.

In any case, XP is fine for me. Or good enough. It doesn’t freeze unless I provoke it, like trying to run apps in realtime. If I want more icing on the cake, I can get it, without Vista, without IE7. And if I ever really feel backed into a corner, I’ll save up and get something from Apple.

Apple II.. a fond memory.. what a great keyboard it had. First computer I ever used. We had something called “computer science” then, not a very practical class now that I think of it, not back then. Ranting.
