Windows Live Messenger Beta Now Available for Downloading

I was going to use a screenshot of my own contact list, but the cheesy kitten in the Microsoft screenshot was so funny, I couldn’t resist. If you haven’t been part of the by-invitation beta program, Microsoft has thrown open the IM door and made the new Windows Live Messenger beta available for downloading starting today.
The new release aims to help Microsoft compete better with communications tools from Google, Skype Technologies and others. It offers a PC-to-phone calling service called Windows Live Call, and free video with voice communications called Video Conversation. The beta service includes a “sharing folders” feature that lets users share photos and other files of any size with Messenger contacts by dragging and dropping the files into their Windows Live Messenger window. It also lets users send messages when their contacts are offline, with the messages delivered the next time the recipient logs on. Source: CIO
We Say: Here comes the awful Microsoft naming. Anyone remember .Net Passport? Why not leave it as MSN Messenger or at worst, MSN Messenger Live? Should you upgrade? I did and while the new features don’t get in the way, I miss the little photo icons by each person’s name in MSN 7.5. Otherwise, it’s a pretty simple transition. (You have to restart your system, which is a drag.)

click the ‘manage your contacts’ button next to the word wheel and select ’show details’. it will bring back the photo icons in about half their original size. if you want to fully customize the new messenger i suggest you download mess patch from http://www.mess.be
