The Computer Bed
By Alice Hill
RealTechNews
Anyone remember the Murphy Bed? It was a bed that basically flew up into the wall so you could use the space by day for something else. Not sure why they lost popularity, maybe it was all those old movies with people flying up into the wall and getting trapped that had something to do with it, or that the futon couch/bed took over, but today we found a company called Flying Beds that sells an updated version of the Murphy bed for computer users.
We Say: Not sure if I want my computer under the bed while I sleep (talk about noise and heat) and the $2,079 price tag for the TWIN said it all- costs a fortune and no chance of sharing it with another person. But great for dorms and small kids assuming you have the $$$.

Mike Loran says:
Study the picture and make a few sketches. You could build it yourself for under $200 plus mattress. Looks perfect for a dorm. Turning the computer off will eliminate the noise and heat aspect.

I suggest occasionally turning it off.

Don’t worry about the lack of room for a bedmate. Odds are that if you’re the sort who’d really want a hybrid bed and computer desk, you won’t have anyone joining you in the sack.

This bed very well may be the worst thing since Jordan came out of the closet.

As someone who has done home improvement work I can already tell it looks like a bad idea. I can’t tell from the picture but it looks like they didn’t make any allowances for the wires that go along with any modern day computer. Granted that many things are becoming wireless but were not totally wire free yet. Not to mention all of the dust and lint that you could get on anything you put there.

You could just by a Mac, I mean, that’d solve all your problems right there.

I think this is a great idea as a spare bed for guests if you have limited available space like I do. Not only that, but after looking at the animated .gif of the overpriced model in the article, I could easily design a home-made version of it.

Your right it would be neat for a dormroom or computer/ spare bedroom… esp if you don’t have alot of space. Its not something an adult should be “excited” about buying or anything but it could be handy. I bet you can make that bed for MUCH cheaper than they are selling it for…

I see someone stepping out of bed , right onto their pricey lapttop !
or even better hanging a foot on the printer cable and yanking the whole mess into the middle of the floor , but its a neat idea for a bookcase/ bed

A lot of the posts here seem to be coming from some really short sighted people.
Main market for this thing would be college dorms; people with limited room and usually only a notebook.
I also don’t see an issue with the wiring, you just can’t zip tie everything out of site.

Colleges are the LAST people that need to see something like this. Dorm beds are small enough, and this thing looks to be SMALLER than an actual twin sized mattress. Colleges get wind of this and they’re going to figure out a way to make their own cut-rate version that’s just barely good enough. Then they can use it to cram even more people into a single room and increase the misery that is dorm life.

I think this is a cool idea, but I would rather make one for about $100-$300 in parts and have some fun building it instead.
That picture shows you everything you need to know to build one!

Its Brilliant!!! and yes that is if you dont plan on getting laid or having a life… If i didn’t get to my boyfriend by the time i did, he’d proably have one by now!!! would almost consider buying him one. that is…. for he would have a little more room when the love couch became his bed. as is his compter has him wrapped around its finger more than i do. would be perfect!!! mwaaa hahahaha my scheme will work wonders!

Just my thoughs…
1. You would have to bolt it to the wall else that baby is falling forward
2. cables wouldn’t be a problem if the “table” had holes and that the actual cross-section was a “L” not just a board that way when it was down it would not crush any cables
3. wall outlet better be right there else you’re going to have cables showing.
4. support for mid section of bed doesn’t look to sturdy unless they’re using some expensive material and not wood, hence the $$$ or just a steel frame around the mattress
but then again what do i know

No jumping up and down on the bed, then?
My only problem would be with the *huge* pile of crud that typically gets stored under my bed. So where would all that go?

while definatily over priced, am looking at DIYing a version of this. First build one idential to the above then modify it to suit the need, the tricky part for me is locating/identifying a suitable gas assisted piston to handle the moving weights. Considering my target use the above definateily needs a flip around foot guard, to prevent people putting their feet on the desk area, Unless has any one managed to get the desk to recess itself closer to the rear when it drops? There is another simular option where the desk goes above the bed, but I think its a little less suitable for older age groups. The other bed design has a few names, but clei is one of them. It is at http://www.clei.co.uk/clei/cabrio.htm. Please contact me if some one can recommend a suitable adjustable gas assisted piston for this computer bed ? Thanks Colm
