Hack your iPod, Play Doom

Bet you never thought of this. With a little (ok, sometimes a lot) tweaking, you can download subway maps, or Merriam-Webster’s pocket dictionary to your iPod, use it to track your running progress, find dates (yes, find dates), and best of all, play Doom! The Doom thing requires that you wipe your Apple firmware and install Linux, but Doom, you get to play Doom. Naturally, being Linux, you can install all kinds of apps on there, like lots of other games, Wikipedia, and even a basic Unix shell. Nice overview article here, but check out iPodLinux.org for all of the juicy details on how to void your iPod warranty. Sorry, I phrased that badly… I meant to say: improve your iPod.

Always feel a little skeptical whenever people announce games running for mp3 players/calculators (had “Wolfenstien” for a calculator once, was nothing of the sort), but that doom does at least look impressive. If it runs half decently, it could be amazing.

I’m always skeptical whenever they announce they have a certain product running on a system that it shouldn’t be (had “Wolfenstien” for a calculator once, it was nothing like wolfenstien), but if doom runs as good as it looks, then I could be converted.

orrrr…. If you want to leave your iPod as a music player and leave the other stuff to more capable devices(PDA, Treo, etc.) you can just get a nice firmware replacement to make the iPod a better music player.

Support for more audio codecs than I would ever use, although I use ogg often which is why this firmware is a godsend. You can change the now playing screen if you want to be different. Plus if you really must you can play doom via plugin. All in all, it’s only function is to make a better media player and is most welcome on my iPod.

I’m content with being able to change the font and the graphic files on my 5G. Nothing major, just a little customization. It also makes it easier to read when in the dock.
Do a search for ipodwizard, if you’re at all interested.
