Get Access to Yahoo’s Beta Webmail Now!
By David Johnston

If you haven’t heard about Yahoo’s upcoming changes to Yahoo! Mail, you’re missing out. Yahoo is planning a complete overhaul of the user interface with new graphics and better usability. By using Ajax to create a much more dynamic page. For example, when you want to compose a new email, a new “tab” on the page opens up, so you can move back and forth between your inbox and composition without shuffling windows. Yahoo has also integrated RSS into the beta version of Yahoo! Mail which is very promising, but too slow for me to reccomend at the moment. Probably the best feature I’ve noticed so far is a vastly improved search feature which will search through the entire text of your emails and show you the surrounding text, much like a regular search engine does.
I know I have been on the waiting list to get accepted into the beta for many, many months and I was frustrated that I couldn’t use the new system yet. Luckily, someone found a way to trick Yahoo into giving you access to the beta, and it’s actually very simple. I did it and it worked like a charm. I did find, however, that if your location is already set to the US (or wherever you are) you will have to temporarily change it to some other location (like the UK). After you get access to the beta you can repeat these steps to set it back (and you’ll still be in the beta group). Have fun!
Update! For a great in-depth review of the beta Yahoo! Mail, check here. Thanks to Andy for the review

Yes the search is vastly improved. The reading pane is nice, but doesn’t offer a lot of value on a small screen. Ajax autocomplete is great, drag and drop messages into folders is great…all in all, it’s a real contender to Gmail, though some may still prefer Gmail despite all the new features. Full Review

This did not work for me. Seems a bit half baked. I’ll wait til it’s out of beta.

I’ve used the beta now for many months and honestly I love the interface. But be warned. It is not for those who have not upgraded their computers in a decade. At work I use a Pentium 3 500 machine, running win xp(amazing, I know). It’s pretty clean but as soon as it tries to log into yahoo mail.. bam. It hurts so bad because of the slowness. At home it’s a wonderful experience though. They did a good job.

I’ve been using it for a while but it does have some bugs and hangs up. But all in all it is rather good.
As for getting to use the Beta version. I had two friends switch over last week after telling them about it and it was easy. All they had to do was go to options and in the top left you see Yahoo! Mail Beta has arrived! Try it now!
They are both in the USA as well.
Cheers!

You can just go here: http://edit.yahoo.com/config/set_intl
Change to the UK and save it. Check mail, get the beta. Go back to the url and switch back to your home country and it’ll stick.

That’s weird. I’ve been on Yahoo Mail Beta for quite a while now. I logged in one day, and a prompt came up asking me if I wanted to try the Beta. I accepted and have been on the beta for, oh, probably 2 months now.
I don’t care for it too much. My experience is similar to #4: When I’m on my university’s network with my laptop, it takes f o r e v e r to log into the Beta. And the drag and drop stuff is great, but it’s not as smooth as Gmail is. The way I can tell that I don’t like it as much is I now subconsciously check my Yahoo mail less often than I used to.

BigManChili, you can also switch back to the standard interface via a link in the top-left side of the page under the logo. Right next to “Sign Out” and “My Account” should be a “Switch Back” link. I hope that helps
