Kirk, Spock to Soar Again?
By Michael Santo

I loved Star Trek when it was first on. Little did I realize that when I would later watch Star Trek: The Next Generation, I would think “man, the original series was corny”. Corny plotlines, corny Kirk-gets-every-girl-around, corny music (and yes, I realize that the first season of TNG had the same corny music whenever anything dramatic happened). TNG was a great improvement, and I also liked Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
That was it, though. Voyager was sub-standard, and don’t even get me started on Enterprise. Well, let’s hope a return trip to the Federation of Kirk and Spock does not again fall into the corny category, as Paramount Pictures announced today that “Mission Impossible III” director J.J. Abrams (also known for Alias and Lost) will produce the next Star Trek feature film.
Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of “Star Trek” characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission. Source: Reuters
We Say: Good, bad? We’ll have to see. We’ll also have to see how much history they rewrite. For example, anyone who remembers “Where No Man Has Gone Before“, which was the first Kirk / Spock episode filmed, though not the first Star Trek episode filmed, remembers that McCoy was not the doctor then.
Of course, as viewers of Enterprise may recall, maintaining canon is not a big issue with the current Star Trek writers.

Cognizer says:
I’m not too sanguine about the Hollywood suits being able to create good Trek movies or series anymore. At least, not until some truly fresh blood comes in that respects the canon, lore, fans, etc., and what made TOS (The Original Series) the foundation of this billion+ $$ franchise.
There are others that feel similarly and are dedicated to the preservation and continuation of Star Trek, as it was and as it should continue to be. http://www.newvoyages.com/ is (imo) in the forefront of quality fan productions that are encroaching upon the sacred frontier that once only Hollywood had access to.
(Not associated with New Voyages, just a fan)
On the other hand, if J.J. Abrams somehow does create true Trek, I will watch in amazement and be pleasantly surprised.

Ugh, this will be a huge failure. How about another TNG movie? Or a DS9 movie? I for one would like to see what’s going on now with Sisko & Co. There used to be rumblings of a movie about the time ship that visited Voyager on occasion, that could be good.

Maybe it’s just me, but you can never have enough Star Trek!

Bill Ramsey says:
“Enterprise” and “Deep Space 9″ made the error of making actors who became popular in extreme roles play straight guys. They couldn’t be crazy or play in drag anymore. In addition, the characters on “Enterprise” were too much alike, and the non-crew Vulcans were cardboard stereotyes.
Did the original Vulcans play a trick on Spock because he was a halfbreed? Nobody else has ever done the greeting or the split-finger thing, as I recall.

I think TV gets worse every year so all of the stuff I hated when it first came on, now seems pretty good in reruns. (compared to what’s new now) Even some of those old star trek series.
What about the cartoon version? (star trek the animated series) There are 22 original TAS episodes, check a torrent site if you never seen them?
The most corny kirk episode I can remember atm was when him and spock crossed the neutral zone to steal the romulan cloaking device… I almost expected the musical score to break into the sound track from jaws! (shark attack)
Some things in the trek world are not well thought out… Like deep space 9! It’s a space station directly above a planet!!! If they were outside of the solar system, how deep would that be?
I never seen one episode that even addressed the possibility of the other 8 deep space stations… Were they destroyed?
Then there is the female captain with the girlish sounding name, captain janeway? What is this, a comic book? What if kirk had been named captain dickway?
