Our Prez is Guilty of Piracy, According to the RIAA
By Michael Santo
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews
For those of you who don’t recall my prior article, the RIAA and MPAA basically said that CD ripping and backup copies are not legal. If (and I DO say if) we agree that this is true, this would imply our President illegally ripped Beatles tunes from a CD onto his iPod … since he claims in a video that he has Beatles tracks on it, and we know from other news that Apple … and Apple haven’t agreed on Beatles songs on iTunes.
Link to video.
We Say: Say it isn’t so, George! Also, say you don’t really have songs by The Archies on your iPod!

Keith says:
Use of the President to illustrate your previous article is sensationalism. It would be equally true to say “many people” rather than a specific individual. The last guy to be kicked off this site’s writing team was dabbling into politics, and so I wonder why the inconsistency all of a sudden by posting an article suggesting something negative about a politician. Let’s save that kind of story for /.

Lewie says:
Lighten up, Keith. I believe that the point being made was that obeying draconian laws is problematic at best. Absolutely nothing was mentioned about the President’s policies, up or down. I actually thought it was a clever post and a nice change from the all too frequent “hot new cell phone in a hot new color” dreck.

Thorndike says:
Well, if he can’t be impeached for all the other stuff he has done…maybe we can get him for this. He IS breaking a law the Republicans voted for.

Thanks, Lewie. If I said anything negative about the President, it was about the Archies …
You hit the nail right on the head about the point of the post.

I agree on the point of the post, very clever, not politics. It would be interesting to see the RIAA go after the prez. Maybe the media should start pushing them to, and we’ll see what their reaction is; after all if they don’t mind suing dead people or young kids……

I think Keith’s point was that the mere mention of the initials “GW” these days seems to bring the politicaly-unhinged squirting out of the woodwork. (ref. Thorndike’s backhanded non-sense) - and to be fair, mentioning the name “Al Gore” seems to bring on this knee-jerk effect as well.
the RIAA is full of crap, btw

MarkSpacer says:
Just because the RIAA says it, doesn’t make it law, or even mean it’s true. There IS an existing “Fair Use” section of the copyright law.

Hasn’t King GW always put himself above the law? This should be no surprise.

Leo says:
As long as he didn’t have to take DRM off of those Beatles tunes he didn’t violate the DMCA. As MarkSpacer said, the RIAA is simply starting to spout its views as the truth.

Gargumma says:
What is this Keith guy talking about?? The main thing here is not Politics at all. The President (not Bush, any Prez) should be considered - and also actually represents - a role model in many ways, and that’s as far as Politics go on this subject. Then, you take the Nixon quote and you notice something IS very wrong, objectively. If instead of “something” we say “someone”, then it’s very clear the RIAA responds for the position. It’s a fact that it’s considered illegal, it’s a fact the guy publicly admitted “the crime” and news are made of facts. Sensationalism is distortion surrounded by the will to “create a different, misleading truth”. There’s no distortion at all here, to begin with. Republicans would always focus on the “Bush” part; people who think will soon perceive it’s not about Bush, but about THE PRESIDENT, whoever he is, acting like us and thinking it’s ok.
