The Inner Working of a Bayesian Spam Filter
By Yan Fortin

Whether we like it or not, spam mail is now an integral part of our lives. The day we’ll stop receiving \/1@gra ads in our inboxes is the day that the moon will probably come crashing down on our heads. There’s not much we can do to stop spammers except use a good junk mail filter. Unfortunately, these guys keep finding new ways of tricking our anti-spam applications in thinking their crap is valid mail. The solution? Use a filter that learns from its mistakes: The Bayesian spam filter.
“The Bayesian Theory, when applied to spam mail, is a very effective method of detecting which emails are legitimate or not. Bayesian filters calculate the probability of a message being spam according to its content. The more emails it sees, the more effective it gets. At first, the filter will not be perfect, but if you provide it with hundreds of emails to analyze, it should eventually achieve approximately 99.5% of efficiency.”
We Say: Is it an utopian dream to hope that the Internet will be free of spam someday?

I’ve used Thunderbird for quite awhile now. Its built in spam filter works amazingly well. Much much better than the ones on Yahoo or Hotmail.

My company has purchased a Bayesian Spam Filter (http://www.spambully.com) and I have to say it is an absolutely excellent product. It works with Exchange accounts, that is very important for us. The very first time you start Spam Bully, its Bayesian spam filter will learn from your own personal email habits, identifying good and spam messages. Every time you download your email, Spam Bully will make sure good emails make it to your Inbox. Spam emails are sent to the “Spam” folder. Emails SpamBully may have difficulty classifying, go to a special “Unsure” folder. You can always adjust emails in these folders by using the Spam and Not Spam buttons in the SpamBully toolbar. Tons of features and worth a look.
