Amazon.com Jumps Gun on NCAA Basketball Winner

Shades of Dewey Defeats Truman. Yes, March Madness is here, and it may have affected auto-emailers at Amazon.com. Some people may have been surprised when they looked at their inbox on Monday morning to see that UCLA had won (which by now we know they did not, as the Florida Gators racked up their first title).

The body of the e-mail included the message “Congratulations (placeholder for winning team),” and went on to offer customers the chance to purchase an NCAA cap and other goods. Source: AP via Yahoo! News

We Say: Well, just as Truman could gloat, so can Florida, I suppose. :-)

Congratulations to Amazon.com! Not only shades of Dewy Vs Truman, but also takes us back to the Fort Wayne, Indiana’s re-election of Winfield Moses for Mayor and the full news media declaring Reagan the winner of the 1980 presidential election before all the polls were closed. I guess it just goes to show that it is time that the media, press et al. wait for the end of the games before announcing the winner — history has shown us all that there is no psychic knowledge about the winners of elections, basketball games OR any competition!
