iPodMame - Need I Say More?
By Michael Santo

Well, if you don’t know about MAME, then I probably do need to say more. If you know about it, and especially if you have an iPod, you may be as excited as my wife was (she loves Galaxian).
MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, and as its name implies, it allows you to play those old coin-op games on your PC. iPodMame — the aim, of course, is to port MAME to the iPod. And as the screenshot above shows, it appears to work (at least, somewhat).
It’s still very early, so currently, the only games and devices confirmed are Ms. Pacman and Pacman on the nano and 5G iPod. I would expect this to improve as time goes on.
We Say: My wife was excited about this at first, but she’s very protective of her iPod so my guess (hope) is she won’t ask me to help her install this (also since only Pacman and Ms. Pacman are confirmed). But if they ever get Galaxian confirmed …

seems neat, but hacking your ipod with linux is a pain. I’ve done it and it just doesn’t seem to be enough reward for it.
just sell us the games Apple!
why don’t they sell the ability to add games?

Hey, they have breakout on the iPod! That game is addictive. Of course, I play it on my TI-83 as I don’t have an iPod

Congratulations David, you sound like a stupid hippy who would rather bash the iPod (and possibly like-devices) than to admit you either don’t need one or can’t afford one.

Hippies are anti-iPod now? Or are people just randomly inserting “stupid hippy” comments to completely unrelated things because they are stupid? The world waits…

David didn’t bash the iPod. He’s np hipie either. More like a chippie because he knows his AMD and writes some of our best articles on CPUs. Show some respect.

No iPod bashing was intended. In fact, I thought I was defending it. Whenever I’ve pick up an iPod, I gravitate towards the breakout game. It’s one of my all-time favorites. The scroll wheel is an added twist, which is something the calculator lacks.

In case anyone is wondering, it -should- be possible to get the invaders-like games working. I’m working on that at the moment. The controls seem ideal for that sort of game, so it should work out nicely. Since it uses the same processor core (Z80) as pacman does, it should work with a minimum of work.
