You know that the second someone claims to have the biggest image, next week there will be one twice as big. But at least for today, here is the largest image available online. It’s a whopping 86400 x 43200 pixels, RGB, 10.7GB uncompressed TIFF file. It comes from NASA and is a shot of the earth.

We Say: With a $40,000 39 megapixel digital camera already on the market, how soon before we can take these oursleves and think nothing of it. 5 Years?

David Johnston says:
The resolution of digital cameras is far outpacing the resolution of the devices we have available (other than prints) to view them. I think at a certain point you just have to realize that enough is enough. When you have to scale the image down by more than 75% just to see it on your monitor, I think you’ve already passed by that point

I tend to agree with both of your statements:
Any more than 400% of a typical 1280×1024 browser window is a waste for online viewing
The resolution required for printing is “a whole n’other thing.”
At one point, the general concensus was that, in order to match the best chemical film, it would take a 50MP sensor. I suspect that this estimate has since been revised to 16-24MP (35mm SLR to medium format).
Anyway, 86400 x 43200 pixels seems to be a bit much. My 3.4GHz Pentium 4 has enough trouble with the 10.2MP (15MB) RAW images from my Nikon D200.

Wouldn’t the best chemical film have to include large format and also outlier stuff like view cameras? I realize not everyone uses such equipment, but if you wanted the best chemical film, I know that’s what people use.
I have been very pleased with even my Powershot G3, and the Digital Rebel is even nicer. I have only very rarely used the film Rebel since I got the digital.

You guys dont realize all the aspects of a higher resolution camera. The people who actually use them are the game developers. They take a standard picture and put you, the gamer, in the middle of it. And because the picture is sooooo large and soooo detailed, the creator can make the smallest thing look awesome. Gamers will go to that one wood chip lying on the ground and analyze it. The extreme detail comes into effect in this circumstances and we dont even realize it. The more they improve, the better, and the lower end cameras drop in price
Just keep that in mind!

So that explains why my computer froze when I tried to view it.
Nothing like trying to put 10 pounds of potatos in a 5 pound bag.
