Video Game Helps U.S. Soldiers Learn Iraqi Culture, Body Language

Body language can be very important in correct interpretation of a situation, and thus DARPA has funded a “game” to help soldiers learn Iraqi body language. The game is called Tactical Iraqi. The system module, or engine, was designed by Hannes Högni Vilhjálmsson of the USC Information Sciences Institute and is known as “Social Puppet.”
The simulators are equal parts tutorial and video game. They place soldiers in simulated, three-dimensional Middle Eastern environments and expose them a variety of social situations.
The soldiers can interact with local residents, including curious boys, shy women and suspicious men, after learning basic language and gesturing skills. The “natives” are all independently endowed with artificial intelligence and react according to how well or poorly a soldier handles a situation. Source: AP via Forbes
We Say: This is pretty interesting stuff. They are also working on Tactical Pashto for Afghanistan. A BBC story indicates that the video game engine being used is Unreal Tournament, although it’s not specific as to which version of UT.

It might help if Berlitz were involved from the getgo. Learning videogame body lingo is no substitute for the real language.

And how about a DARPA funded game called Tactical Woman? Oh yeah, I bet not too many employees at DARPA could develop such a body language simulation game.
