Microsoft to Release Notebook Power Drain Bug Fix

You may recall our earlier article on Reduced Core Duo Notebook Battery Life. As we indicated then, TG Daily had managed to narrow down the bug to Microsoft’s ACPI driver. Since then TG Daily has continued to work with both Intel and Microsoft to isolate the issue. According to a TG Daily article released last night, the ACPI driver in Windows XP SP2 has been confirmed to be the source of the problem.
According to the article, both Microsoft and Intel have fixes (though Intel would not confirm this), and the initial workaround, which involved changes to the registry and which was released only to partners (but still made its way to the Internet) is not recommended, due to potential instability. The full article is very detailed, and discusses both the history, missteps, and current conclusions.
We Say: According to the article, the initial workaround has made it into a few notebook production lines; the new fix is under evaluation in Microsoft’s labs (and will require a BIOS update as well!).

Okay, now the right thing would be to make a list of notebooks at risk so that consumers (potential suckers/victims) would be alert to the problem.
Oh that’s right, that might hurt business.
