There was always that moment when you had to think about it and decide if it was worth the risk - well, what a waste of time. Gum is no problem on the innards. Another great myth I tested once in the southern hemisphere was the water swirling backwards down the drain thing- I coudn’t get it to work and now I know why - it’s a myth. Hold on a minute! They say one particular chicken lived 18 months without a head? Sorry, but this has to be bogus. No head equals no mouth (or beak) which equlas starvation or, quicker, dehydration. Unless that chicken was on an IV drip, I’d do some more fact checking on all of these so-called myths.

The chicken that lived without a head was Mike, from Fruita, CO. His owner tried to keep as much neck as possible when chopping off his head, and left the brain stem pretty much intact. He was hand-fed with an eyedropper. You can read all about him at his website Mike the Headless Chicken.

No, however because chewing doesn’t really break it down all that much, it is a choking hazard. Even if you split the gum into two or more pieces, it’s very easy for it to join up again and depending on where the pieces stick to one another, you could end up in a bit of trouble.
I think there was a good reason for the myth.
