Prosper.com: Lend Money in an Auction-Type Format

Want to lend money to a perfect stranger? Here’s the way it works at Prosper.com: someone submits a request for a loan with the amount he needs and the maximum interest rate he will pay. Others “bid” on the loan, submitting how much they will loan and what rate they want. They don’t have to bid for the entire loan, of course. Then the bids with the lowest rates are combined to form the full loan. Sounds kind of like eBay, right?
The idea is to gain “reputation” by joining groups on Prosper, like say the PTA or … maybe something like Mensa. Of course, your Experian credit rating is another criteria by which lenders can choose to lend to you or not. Naturally, you have to worry about default, etc. and that’s all covered in Prosper’s Help sections.
Lenders essentially deposit their money with Prosper–which holds it in an interest-bearing account with Wells Fargo–and either review the loan requests individually or fill out a form permitting Prosper to allocate money to borrowers who meet certain criteria.
Chief among those criteria is the borrower’s rating from the credit reporting bureau Experian, but borrowers can also join or create groups with defined interests or characteristics that, they hope, will make them more attractive to some lenders. Source: The New York Times via News.com
Note: The sentence excerpted from the original article which states that the pass-through account with Wells Fargo earns interest is incorrect. The Prosper FAQ clearly states you do not earn interest.
We Say: The first sentence of this post tends to reveal my initial feelings toward this. But those were my initial feelings. The more I think about this, since the (see the bitmap above) you can see the debt / earnings ratio, the credit rating, the person’s story … this might work. On the other hand, the first time there is a scam at Prosper (like you see sometimes as eBay) there will be big headlines. However, I might even try this myself, with a very small cash stake.

I think it is an interesting concept and a much better alternative than people paying insane interest on credit card cash advances. But you are right - the one second someone screw with this and cheats the system, the thing coudl collapse. You need an eBay mentality - which means eBay should buy them and add this to their lineup.

All without having to turn to a career as a loan shark!

I transferred a thousand dollars to Prosper.com and have managed to loan it all out to borrowers with A and AA credit. I’m about 2 weeks away from my first set of payments from people (whoo, $1.66 from this person, $1.57 from this person, etc.).
It looks like a lot of people are refinancing loans and improving rates to about what they would get from credit unions. It also looks like many borrowers are turning their revolving credit with crazy variable interest into fixed monthly payments.
My aggregate loans are over 9% interest. Is the loss of liquidity worth the extra interest? Unless you have your 3-6 months of expenses in an available form in your emergency fund, there’s no need to go tying up money in Prosper.
There is clearly a lot of venture capital flying around, too. The Prosper forum was discussing a couple of lenders who have a grand or so in most loans so far, to the tune of $350,000 or more out there.
(As for Major Carter’s plea… go to Prosper.com and fill out the application. Once you are set up and they have run your credit, you can create a loan listing. The loan listing will be bid on by the lenders like me, and when the auction finishes, you’ll have money from whatever lenders liked your interest rate. It’s NOT instantaneous…)

My son-in-law and daughter asked if I knew anyone who would lend them $16,000. to pay off their big rig. He has been an owner operator and has been driving for Allied for the past 10 years but over the years other drivers have been getting the longer hauls, the more frequent calls to haul and they have been having a hard go of it lately.
They want to pay off their big rig (Allied of Bismarck ND holds the lien on their truck) so they can go with another company. As things stand right now they are in a lose lose situation because of politics being played by the owners/dispatchers/other drivers of Allied in the Bismarck office.

I was unemployed for 1 month, and I have been strugling (barely) to keep our wheels/roof over our head,but I have not a dime left over for Food. It makes me feel like a failure that I feed him stale bread/freezer burned hot dogs,and lots of mostly unhealthy foods (because they are less expensive & have a longer shelf life) If any can afford to help us out until my 90 day probation/raise has ben promised - October 27, 2007 to be exact… I WILL FOREVER BE GREATFUL, AND I WILL WISH FOR GOOD THINGS TO BE RETURNED TI OUR THREEFOLD!..

Springfield Inv was to give us a loan. We paid 2000. in western union and what did we get nothing. They promise us that the loan was on the way, that was 1 1/2 years ago. You that need a loan needs to check to see who you are getting a loan with. There are some really good scam artist out there that just want to take your money. They will say anything to you and they will give you just what you don’t want and that is no loan. Springfield Finance is no difference, they promise you everything and give you nothing.
