Gmail to Handle Email for Domains?
By Michael Santo

I have my own domain, and this week I struggled to make my email work. It was because the pop servers of the provider hosting my email service were under a DoS attack for 2 - 3 days. Because of that, I was unable to get email, at least not consistently.
I was pretty interested when I found out about this. Google has announced a beta program whereby they host the email for your own domain for you. People will send email to your domain, but you’ll get the email in Gmail. Right now you have to apply to be a member of the program; you go to the page listed above, click through, login with a Google account, and fill out a form. If they are interested in having you beta test, they’ll get in touch with you.
We Say: One thing I really want from my email is reliability. With the exception of a couple of instances, for the most part Gmail has been rock-solid for me. Of course, it’s not yet known if Google will charge for this (and if so, how much), or if it will be ad-supported. For now, since my provider’s overcome the DoS, attack, I’ll stay put, but I’ll be watching.

Just host your own e-mail. It’s simple to setup a server in your home, you don’t need much of a machine and YOU control everything.
I’ve run my e-mail on an exchange server out of my house since 1998. Sure I’ve had a down day or two but at least I can control everything. I can call the ISP and get them to get my net connection up again, I can set maintance windows for when *I* want downtime to upgrade the server or make changes to my domain name.
I think you could really see the setup of most of the “Web hosting providers” out there you’d be shocked at how many short cuts and cheap ways out of things they’ve taken to provide you with the “service” that you pay them more then you should for every month. There is a right way to do things and 90% of the Tech World never thought to learn it.
