Top 10 Career Advantages of ADD

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

I’m not a fan of “disorders”, especially ADD (or Attention Deficit Disorder.) If working a full-time job while running a tech blog and flying all over the world keeps me from being bored, then slap an ADD sticker on my forehead and call it a day. For those wincing under the ADD label, here are some interesting points on why ADD or whataver you call us “Super Multi-taskers” is actually great for a high tech career.

1. The Ability to Hyperfocus
Hours of full engagement and concentration in a task, IF you find it interesting. You can get into the zone and be totally immersed in what you’re doing while the outside world disappears. When I went on the net for the first time in 1993 at an Internet cafe I got on the machine at 8 pm and around 4 am decided it was time to go home.

2. Rapid Fire Mind
Your brain processes information at hyperspeed. You can do things in 30 minutes on a computer that might take other people hours. Downside if you’re stuck with an old machine and not enough RAM you’ll be frustrated cause it can’t keep up with the speed of your brain.

3. Multitasking at Will
Able to run 14 apps at a time and effortlessly switch between each without breaking a sweat. Able to do several projects at a time with ease.

More of the Top 10
4. High Energy Level

5. Highly Creative
Able to think beyond the idea of a box. This comes naturally for ADDers, while others pay thousands of dollars to try and learn this. Since you take in more information than the average person, and you’re easily distractible, you’re more likely to view a problem from many different angles than vanilla people (non ADDers), and therefore come up with more possible solutions to a problem. Need an idea generator? Find an ADDer.

6. Quick Learner
7. Stimulus Seeking Brain
8. Constantly Scanning your Environment
9. Great in a Crisis
10. Risk Taker

    Is this intentional?

Someone writes an article on the Advantages of ADD and then they don’t finish describing five of the advantages.

Looks like they started getting distracted at number three.

Played with a puppy at number four.

Decided to give it the old college try for number five and then just couldn’t finish the rest of the list.

Err….whatever the point is to this I know not. I also got side-tracked into a co-worker showing me pictures of their dog they took on the float trip. Now, being AD/HD, i find myself sometimes just numb and caught ina trance when other *humans* start talking….lol.

Disadvantages to these advantages (in non-tech fields)? Your thinking out of the box and risk taking is unacceptable to superiors because “it hasn’t been done before therefore it will fail, let’s stick with the same old boring way that’s worked a million times before” and…
operating well in crisis mode tends to make us wait til last minute so we’re in crisis mode, another pet peeve of coworkers and superiors.

Also, coincidentally, all the long-time employees seem to have similar tendancies, while the short-timers aren’t so…eccentric.

  37. I see ADD people says:

My son has AD/HD which seems to stay more and more on the ADD side as he gets older. This kid, a teenager, does solve things faster, very “wise to the ways of the world”, and QUICK! This dude remembers everything, of intrest, and I mean everything. He gave us directions to a house, serveral miles and turns away, complete with landmarks a full 2 years after he had been there. He had been there once when he was 8.
I think my boss has ADD. On the up side, most ADD people are a lot of fun to be around.

  43. RapidBrainMovement says:

Sending the story to someone else before you read the entire thing is not a concentration break. I work for the same company as Lee Ann. Who arbitrarily declared hyper thought an abnormality? Personally, I think plodding-brain is a disorder.
Also, who assigned specific ‘words’ to specific objects? Who came up w/’tree’? Cup? Rock? Sky? Rothlesburger never broke the plane. I need new Ferragamo boots. Who came up w/CLOWNS? That’s just stupid. I always wanted to have a tiny live person like “The Indian in the Cupboard”. How hard can that be? Can’t be as complicated as that animal/human hybrid state of the union thing. I thought about a teeny-tiny monkey for a second, but it’s not the same. Do people that hate fur-wearing eat pepperoni? One Step At A Time is bullshit. Who is this enigmatic corporation that bought up the tanzanite mines? Why is the AI bot business progressing so slowly? Gotta be grant $$ motivated. There isn’t a single bot that’s interesting for more than 5 minutes. They piss me off. I’m done w/this.

There’s a reason it’s called a ‘mental disorder’ and not a ‘mental advantage’… She has it all backwards, no wonder she’s so confused! :D

I mean seriously, *vanilla people*? Come on Alice, you can do better than that. My above average attention span not to mention intelligence have no correlation with what flavor or color of person I am. (ADDers = chocolate people?)

btw, love the picture of the boy with a helmet vapidly staring at a tiny spaceship, really helps to get your point across.

  48. Mikey says:

I cannot comment on others, but I’ve worked in jobs that I swear -caused- ADD, jobs where the task was repetetive and unchanging beyond a certain moment in time on the individual task…
Think telephone information operator. Yeah. Semi-automated today, operators get the audio request and usually give you a verbal answer in 20-25 seconds. And they do this all day long.
It does affect the mind. I have all sorts of useless telephone numbers in my head now, for places I’ve never called.
On the other hand, it’s like having speed dial on ANY phone
I happen to pick up. There are no phone numbers stored on my cellphone…I dont need to store them anywhere, I just close my eyes for a second, and there they are. Scary.

Lifetime ADD sufferer (?) here. The multitasking and performance issues certainly benefit me.

I’ve always been able to whip out code 3-4 times faster than everybody else. Of course somebody else always has to check it for errors and omissions afterwards, but the mass bulk of the work would be done at light speed.

Then I’d be off to wander around the cube farm for a bit.

  51. sceptic says:

Except for possibly risk taking, these are all characteristics of the gifted (IQ 2 SD above norm), which of late has been very underdiagnosed while ADD is very overdiagnosed…

  52. sKeptic says:

poor spelling may also be a characteristic of either, sorry about that!

    February 11th, 2006 at 8:22 am

  53. eliza says:

Well I agree with most of it except the multi-tasking. The hyperfocus is right, but that’s why ADDs can’t focus on several things at the same time without forgetting their track on the previous thing they were focusing on. I HAVE to finish a task before going on to the next one, or I’ll get really frustrated. OR… I’ll feel bad about myself, that I can’t finish anything.

I liked the reference to a slow computer.. I was very mad at a Mac G3 with OS 9.2 last week, because I was finishing stuff before it could accomplish a postscript file, for example, ( I ended up looking all over the computer for it, and later realized it was still processing). Patience is NOT an ADDs virtue, which entails becoming bored easily.

  57. Sara says:

It is nice to see someone talking about the advantages rather than trying to minimize the side effects of the disorder by drugging small children.

  59. Bryan Byler says:

    Look Toots…

I’m afraid you are somewhat incorrect…

As a psychology student, and future candidate for a master’s program in abnormal psychology, its clear that you do not have your facts straight…

What you are referring to is NOT ADD per ce, but actually a very similar disorder known as Asperger’s syndrome… It is a very mild form of autism, and would ideally be great for a tech person to have, because it is barely noticeable, and in this way, confused with and often associated with ADD. But its not, it’s DSM 299.80, or page 84 of the DSM if you’d like to check

If, however, you wanted to be politically correct, and your article to be a bit more accurate, you should refer to not ADD, but more so, ADHD-impulsive type, DSM-IV diagnosis criterion 314.02. It is on page 85 of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders, TR-IV

This is a subtype of ADD/ADHD; and the ONLY criterion which you are basing your entire argument on is the hyperactivity symptom noted as: (e), often on the go or driven by a motor (as many tech-type people are)

You make a valid point, and many ADHD and some ADD individuals do experience all or some of the “career perks” that you discuss, but you should really get your facts straight before you: A. post something online for many to read and B. associate yourself with RealTech News…

Thanks, and p.s. Im really not a jerk, I just take psychology really seriosuly, I’m sure you do the same with your “news”

    ~Bryan

  60. Daniel says:

What are the symptoms of ADD? I have all of the advantages you list(except risk taking; I’m very careful about everything I do). I have always been a quick learner and I am very good at multitasking. I think part of this is a result of working at a certain fast-food restraunt, where you either multi-task and apply yourself competely or you fail. But, I am losing my train of thought again, as usual. Please, tell me what the symptoms are.
