WebServUSB is the World’s Smallest Web Server on a USB Flash Drive

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

Truly incredible. I am speechless. And at $89 - $399, this one is worth a try. From the Website: WebServUSB is a full featured web server programmed into flash memory a USB device. It features HTTP and FTP web services, plus a companion email server program which provides POP3 and SMTP mail services. By plugging WebServUSB into any PC with a USB port, it can enable that PC to become and Intranet (LAN) or Internet based web server. WebServUSB can provide the majority of features of a web server costing thousands of dollars all embedded in the USB flash memory. WebServUSB comes in sizes ranging from 128 megabytes to 1 gigabyte.

WebServUSB’s portability makes it easy to move to any PC with a USB port and Intranet/Internet connection. All of the functions, content, and programming remain in the USB plug and will transfer to whatever PC it is plugged into. For portable Internet operation, a Dynamic DNS service such as www.no-ip.com can be used to allow WebServUSB to have a portable domain name reachable at whatever PC its plugged into. The rugged aluminum case protect it against static discharge, cosmic rays (known to erase flash memory), dust, dirt, and mechanical shock.

WebServUSB can serve one web site or even hundreds! Plus its user database allows both single user and group management of user accounts for HTTP and FTP services. For added security, the user accounts created in WebServUSB have no connection to the user accounts in the Windows based PC which its plugged into via a USB port. Thus even if an account is compromised, the intruder can go no further than the internal structure of WebServUSB! Hackers are left “dangling” out on the USB port with no access to the operating system!

WebServUSB features operational compatibility with almost all types of web content, including server side interactive CGI scripts, Perl, PHP, and a variety of multimedia formats such as Flash, RealMedia, and Windows Media. Essentially it can serve any web content.

WebServUSB is also a very handy tool for anyone who wants to learn how to set up a web server or develop websites beyond just the design stage. It allows you to see how your site will work on the web and includes several functions which permit site enhancements. As a local in-house server for debugging websites, it’s very useful and easy to manage. WebServUSB is also superb for carrying on the road, for use with a Laptop. It provides a great way to setup Intranet or Internet file sharing or distribution for projects where you may need to share documents with many people, such as for training.

WebServUSB is simple to configure. This tutorial is written from the point of view of a complete novice and includes step-by-step instructions to set up the basic server plus an example of how to include an additional function (in this case a PERL based message board). Since WebServUSB is compliant with most standards applied to high end web servers, almost any web server add-on or program will function with it.

This isnt anything new, Apache/php/perl/mySQL/etc can be made portable quite easily. Though, this makes it simple for those new to programmming/development.

    I still wouldn’t waste $80 on this.

The Uniform Server — http://www.uniformserver.com/ — can do most of this stuff; the rest could be added in easily. Don’t spend $400 for a USB key with some software on it — this sort of thing is readily available all over the internet.

My blog, http://geekspot.wordpress.com/ has a page for portability — most of the sites linked to there have equivalent, free, and better software. The link is http://geekspot.wordpress.com/portability/ — go have a look!

I just have to wonder how much this baby can handle heavy loads, or getting hit by DIGG? :) It’s probably going to be fine with USB 2.0 support, which goes up to 480mbps theoreticly.

Nice little gadget, and for the price, you can’t lose much by trying it.

    Cheers!

Holy lameness. Above poster is right, this is a scam. It’s just a simple USB flash drive loaded up with some free software. And really, what’s the point? What kind of use cases does this have?

And it costs how much!? How about burning a CD of the same free software for a few pennies, and do the same exact thing. This is NOT a webserver, it’s a USB flash drive loaded up with some webserver software.

This is nothing… take any sd card or jump drive… load Tomcat on it and you have a web server that is also Java enabled!!! Wow and it comes in your state colors too. Give me a break. Oh and the cost to set up Tomcat on an sd card or jump drive is the cost of the sd card or jump drive.

    TOMCAT is free.

Hey, you could actually get Mambo (open source portal) to run on a standard 64mb USB key that would cost you 20$ :)

There’s a release of Mambo server that is fully loaded with apache, mysql, php, perl, yada yada yada support, and fits in a ridiculously small amount of space. I don’t remember the name of the package, but I installed it last year for a friend. Ok it was running on his HD, but it would work equally well on a USB key I bet.

Kiltalk, you’re talking about the mambo standalone server [msas] loaded with apache/php/mysql, etc. server software — now it’s called JSAS - Joomla Standalone Server (http://jsas.joomlasolutions.com/).

  16. michael says:

OK - the USB Webserver seems like a weird idea at first. But it has it’s advantages.

A portable USB Webserver is a great development tool if you tend to move between machines. I develop all my sites offline, and I move between different computers when I do it. (I have additional development tools only on one computer). A portable webserver lets me unplug from my laptop and into my desktop, and just keep going where I left off.

    However:
You CAN set A USB Webserver up yourself - but if you don’t have the knowledge, a kickstart like this stick, can save a lot of headbanging. Admittedly installing freeware onto a USB stick and selling it at a big price can seem like a SCAM to those of us who know how to do it.

If the adaptor can be stand-alone instead of attaching to a PC, I’d say just a rack full of these instead of several data-center full. :)

That being said, it’s just pointless. This is just softwarewhere delivered in different format, and that software happens to be for server use.
