Apple Continues to Repair Cracked nano Screens for Free

First, note the word cracked. Last year there were stories and even lawsuits about the screen on the nano easily cracking or scratching, and this message to service providers applies to cracked screens only. Apple continues to state that cracking or scratching is an isolated issue.
In a message last week to its service providers in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific, the company said any customer reporting that their iPod nano’s screen had cracked should have their repairs processed as “covered repairs.”
“The AppleCare Repair Center will also be processing such repairs as covered repairs,” the company added. This means iPod nano owners with cracked displays should be able to contact AppleCare via telephone to arrange for their players to be serviced under warranty.
It’s unclear if Apple’s decision to continue replacing cracked iPod nano screens stems purely from the initial vendor quality problem or if it is a result of an ongoing issue with the screens. However, Apple’s recent note to service providers appears to imply the latter. Source: Apple Insider
We Say: As far as I know, the lawsuits are still ongoing, and when Apple quietly added sleeves to the nano retail boxes, it seemed like a sort of admission. And it is interesting that they are continuing the free repairs, despite only being for cracked screens.

How much flex do Nanos have? Seems to me if you shove it in your front pocket at all you are looking for trouble as eventually something has to crack if there is any flex at all. Since I don’t own one where is the scratching coming from?

This has become a full time job! I purchased 3 ipods for Christmas 2004.. After 3-4 months 2 of them were broke - screens..
Since my kids were all at college I did not learn of this until Christmas 2005… This has been unbelieveable! There is not indication on the information sheets that these “jukeboxes” are so senisitive.. Each time I spoke to someone @Apple - they said that there is not an overabunance of cracked screens.. My kids on the other hand - they say all their friends ipods are breaking.. I couldn’t even find out what Generation they were! We sent the 2 of them in for a diagnosis & the company refuses tp tell me what is exaclt wrong!

» Seemingly Different iPhone Screens Anger Users » Blog Archive Alice Hill’s Real Tech News - Independent Tech says:
[…] Shades of the nano screen problem, except that was physical scratching / cracking. In this case, iPhone users have posted problems to Apple support forum and elsewhere, including side-by-side comparisons (above) which show many screens identified by “LCD panel ID” number 7 (left in the picture) showing a discernable grid of dots, and being dimmer than those with a panel ID of 5. On the Apple forum, several messages spelled out how to determine the iPhone’s screen information. Tapping in *3001#12345#* (including the asterisks) on the phone keypad and hitting the Call button puts the device into Field Test Mode, which offers detailed information about the iPhone’s hardware, including the firmware version and “LCD panel ID” number. Panel IDs that start with a 7 are those being bashed by users; screens identified with a number that beings with a 5, on the other hand, are characterized as brighter and sharper because they don’t seem to have the grid pattern. I purchased an ipod nano last november, and recently the screen cracked. It is under a one year warranty, but on the apple website it says that this will not be covered. However, I’ve been reading articles online say that apple agreed to fix cracked screens if it is still under warranty. I don’t know which one is correct. What should I do?
