AOL, Yahoo to Start Charging E-Mail Postage

Snowy Egret Stamp

By Michael Santo
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews

You read correctly, though the system will only be used for companies. They will be charged from 1/4 to 1 cent for each email; the email thus paid for will receive preferential treatment. For example, with AOL the email will go straight to inboxes, and not have to pass through any of the spam filters AOL uses. Messages will also be marked as “AOL Certified E-Mail.” Don’t worry, unpaid-for email will still be delivered, but it won’t get this special treatment.

AOL and Yahoo will be using Goodmail Systems’ processing system to collect the electronic postage and verify the identity of the sender. AOL will be implementing the system in the next two months, while Yahoo will be trying the system out, and has not yet decided how paid vs. unpaid mail will be treated.

But critics of the plan say that the companies risk alienating both their users and the companies that send e-mail. The system will apply not only to mass mailings but also to individual messages like order confirmations from online stores and customized low-fare notices from airlines.

“AOL users will become dissatisfied when they don’t receive the e-mail that they want, and when they complain to the senders, they’ll be told, ‘it’s AOL’s fault,’ ” said Richi Jennings, an analyst at Ferris Research, which specializes in e-mail. Source: The New York Times via News.com

We Say: Oh, oh. This sounds a lot like Net neutrality could be taking a hit with this “feature” of the two email systems. A lot of the arguments put forth by AOL and Yahoo center around spam reduction, but most of the time I get very little spam anyway (most of it is caught by the filters). To me, this sounds like just another way to increase revenue.

AOL and Yahoo are guided by morons. Do they really want the same fame as RIAA? I suppose this is their “answer” to Gmail: try to scam some clueless IT “managers”.

I guess the big question is: Can I filter all the “AOL Certified E-Mail” straight into the junk-mail box?

This system doesn’t affect/effect the current way that mail is sent. Nobody gets hurt if they don’t sign up for this.

I agree this might damage net neutrality, but not signing up doesn’t change anything.

In theory this sounds like an okay idea: make companies pay for e-mail they send. If everyone would have to do this, spam would basically go away.

Let’s see: My company might send a couple of thosand order confirmations and similar e-mails a day, so the cost to do that would go from $0.00 to $2.50 per thousand, which doesn’t seem that horrible. For a bigger company, say Amazon that amount could be quite significant.

Also, make no mistake, once companies start paying for the e-mails, individuals will have to so soon. AOL for one will not want to pass up a source of revenue, now will Yahoo.

Couldn’t a someone pay for the email to make it bypass the filters, there by sending any virus’s or spam mail straight in?

Guess I won’t be using my yahoo account as much.

I’m thinking that the “companies” paying for Yahoo and AOL’s preferential no-filter treatment will be spam ones.

Hurrah, Yahoo–what a way to ensure more spam gets into my Inbox!

Right now people have to pay for snail mail and it still shows up in my mailbox. If this is such a good thing why don’t we have the Gov step in and they can regulate? Maybe our taxes would go down from the 1/4 cent tax. Ha Ha.

Direct routing for spam and other unwanted email is precisely what this will invite. For anyone who thinks spammers, virus senders and all other unwanted emailing types will not pay to send junk email, have you checked your snail mail box lately? Spam is just the email form of so much unwanted junk mail. This reminds me of the idiotic notion a year or so ago that terrorists won’t pay extra to become preferred fliers….

Thats the real beauty of it. The real companies who might use this “feature” are not spam anyway.(for the most part)But companies like amazon have the real power here. All they do is say no to aol because if aol starts de-prioritizing email thats not paid for watch how fast customers will drop them.

  12. Tim says:

Anyone who thinks this is designed to ELIMINATE spam just doesn’t get it.

This is being implemented because spam filters work. Thus companies want a way around them and AOL and Yahoo get a new revenue source. You will get MORE spam now, but it will be “certified” by your email provider. Isn’t that just grand?

Ah, I see so this way, paid SPAM will be sent right to mail boxes. Very sad for AOL users.. :-)

I hope other ISPs will soon learn to set their filters to catch “Certified E-Mail”. If not it will be a bit of a pain but we have the ability to do it our self.

  14. Zach says:

This will hurt everyone, why in the world would a businesses take these expenses without trying to make up for them? They will bring the burden to ordinary customers when if this certified email gets sent down the totem poll to a customer. By accepting this, we will start the beginning of the acceptance of charging “E-postage” for tiny bits of data.

The current postal system charges stamp fees to cover the costs of pay, healthcare, handling, shipping, etc. What does this system have to pay for… email servers, software, maintenance… please with the amount of email sent throughout the day with each of these companies they could pay these expenses within a week from what they would make. Also I’d like to see these companies for others to pay for this service when no one had signed any form of contract pertaining to AOL charging e-postage. If this takes shape, companies should get smart and build their own damn e-mail servers.

    http://www.thenation.com/doc/20060213/chester
Another link to these rediculous claims of ownership to data. I mean you are paying the internet company for an internet connection, if they bundle their software with email services they should brunt the expenses for sticking out that service. Also think of virus exploitation, if a business computer gets a virus and sends thousands of emails to businesses via CERTIFIED bs mail think of how much that company would get charged becuase AOL wont filter their mail.

This would mean Businesses would have to spend more money developing or buying filtering software just for their mail (unless AOL would add filtering for another small fee.) This idea is rediculous and needs to be clarified by either our gov’t or our court system, but seeing how our constitution doesn’t cover the internet in anyway except idealogical interpretation (YEAH i bet our forefathers were really thinking that we’d have INTERNET back then…) I doubt this will happen until the public gets in an uproar about this issue. After all is said an done the gov’t will step in and instead of abolishing this tactic they will make compromises that hurt this practice but still makes it profitable to companies to continue doing this tactic.

Another thought I’d like to add, think of where this will lead to… Charging money for AIM text messages or Yahoo messages…. Just think of the multi-billion dollar market that these two companies have the potential in being the first to tap that market.

If this takes on, you can be guaranteed that people will start paying to send email very soon. And once this model is in place, we’ll start paying for other stuff as well.

Email has traditionally been the killer app of the internet and it has been free and through it an entire global economy has been created. It is through the abuse of a very few people who screw it up for the rest of us, that we will be made to pay.

Humanity is nickle-and-diming itself into oblivion with things like this. I’m a member of the species, but I can’t say I’m proud of the fact. I live secure in the knowledge that global warming and our continued destruction of our environment will at least make sure there’s not going to be a whole lot of us left in 250 years or so.

With the current system that AOL uses, their own “enhanced whitelist system”, some legitimate email gets bounced back to the sender. It doesn;t even need to be “commercial” email.

This thing may bring another service with it. Payed filter to filter the “Certified E-mails”, wouldn’t that be great? I mean come on… who doesn’t want to get spam directly into inbox folder? This solution is provided for spamers, and “big companies” like amazon, ARE SPAMMERS, it doesn’t mean anything if the mails they send are notifications, is still spam. Anyhow, spam isn’t always that friendly, but for sure it will get into our inbox folders in a couple of months.

It’s just an admission on the part of these people that they won’t or can’t fight the spammers. I also think it’s a last ditch attempt at raising money from a newb internet audience.

They’re trying to fight the RSS revolution because direct email is push technology, we’re moving to pull technology now.

Question: if a “certified” email carries a virus that damages my computer can I sue AOL/Yahoo for damages? I’m sure they’ll try to indemnify themselves.

Krack - you didn’t read the article. It’s not the AOL or Yahoo users that will be asked to pay the email postage. They are planning on offering the spammers, and other businesses, that are presumably non-AOL/Yahoo accounts the ability to bypass their junk mail filters by paying to do so. They won’t be asking you for a credit card, they’ll just be dumping more spam in your inbox under the guise of certified mail. The senders will be paying.

  31. Mike Hyland says:

This is a poor excuse for the Digi-eStamp spam solution I proposed back in 2002 to the entire affiliate Adwhore industry. You know the networks harboring professional spammers, who also monitize drive-by and hidden bundling of the Adware/Spyware browser hijacking programs.

Original concept I copywrited. “No one will ever come up with a more fool proof method then I did 2 years ago (Feb 2002) with the Digi-eStamp concept. Everyone gets 500 free Digi-Estamp emails a month on their persoanl ISP account. Penny an e-mail for the overage charge added to their monthly ISP Bill. Bulk e-mailers pay from 1/10 of a cent to 1/100th of a cent once they receive a documented Bulk digi-eStamp ID#. (Publically viewable). Shopping cart providers are exempt and issued unlimited digi-eStamps so they send purchase receipt notifications free. No Digi-eStamp = No Delivery.

The bulk e-mailers and the cyber con-men wanks out there, playing the free e-mailing number game, get nothing delivered if they can’t put something of enough value in every e-mail to equal 1/100th of a cent. No other solution comes close in low cost spam implimentation and worldwide deployment. Benefit to all those with an e-mail box is the ISP can lower monthly connect fees due to decreasing their own bandwidth//server bills by e-mail digi-eStamp profits. No Digi-eStamp and the message gets trashed or sent to Can-Spam authorities.

“Email has traditionally been the killer app of the internet and it has been free”

Free? Hardly. Why do you think ISP’s charge you for your connection. Part of that money goes to pay for the email infrastructure.

What the writer of that quote may have meant is that email has been a bundled service and now Yahoo and AOL are unbundling it. Problem is, the email system is more or less predicated on the idea that the cost of providing email more or less evens out between incoming and outgoing messages, without no specific per-message charge. This proposal is trying to tip the balance in favor of AOL & Yahoo. I can see other service providers just refusing to handle mail coming from Yahoo and AOL.

This will decrease spam from smaller companies that don’t have the funds to send 1,000,000 spam emails a day. However we all know the deep pockets the porn industry has. Expect a ton of “Official” emails with subject blocks saying “Come view my webcam” or “Hot barely legal teens ready for action”. The porn industry could definitely stand to lose 1/4 of a cent an email for all the new revenue they will receive. The prices for the emails are going to go right back on the customers anyway.

Widespread panic about to ensue over email “postage”

  36. Paige says:

All of this makes me wonder what kind of IT morons were sitting in on the meeting where they chose to go forward with this. Certainly SOMEONE in there had to see the potential consequences of sending SPAM through certified mail!

Also - with all the advertisements out from AOL about their auto-updating SPAM and virus filters with no cost to the consumer being the big thing touted here - now you know how they want to make up any lost revenue from that.

  37. Brent says:

It’s just another way to get money from marketers… I mean.. .0025 for each email to go directly to a person’s email box? You just know that companies will shell out for that… it’s just another way for AOL and Yahoo! to make money off of marketers.

  39. Nancy, St. Paul says:

Don’t think this is a spam prevention.

AOL/Yahoo are essentially devaluing you as a consumer struggling against spam and the lip service about protecting our children.

The spam protection they have been providing will be only for the bully on the block. And if you aren’t big enough, or powerful enough, then you don’t deserve it. How many children are employed by the porn manufacturers to send mass mailings? None, I hope.

They don’t need the protection, it’s the individual addresses (recipients) that do - the very people that are threatened by this change.

If it’s about money, I would suggest more advertising be added to the end of each email. Yahoo has been doing this for years.

?Could this be resisted on the part of the populace by appealing to the President, in his still fresh concern for ease of obtaining porn over the ‘net?

  43. Gloricious says:

Of course AOL and Yahoo will make sure they’re not liable if someone sends viruses, most likely they will add something onto their disclaimer when a person signs up for their service ‘Note: Yahoo is not responsible for the receipt of any email containing files that may harm your computer routed via our Goodmail Services.’ If you read through their current disclaimer I believe they already have something similar on there. Unfortunately, if something is listed on a disclosure, there is often little or nothing one can do for recoursive action against it.

  44. Bruce Layne says:

This will not reduce spam. It’s a way of increasing revenue by charging for spam.

We know how spammers operate. Now they will be hacking into all the corporate servers they can, sending their AOL Certified Spam, and the company that got hacked gets stuck with a big bill. This is essentially the same as 80% of the spam in the US being sent from insecure Windows PCs that were infected and turned into zombie spambots, only now, the targets are corporate servers.

  46. Mark Le Hew says:

What your seeing proposed here is only the begining. Yahoo is tied into Verizon as their prefered site. Verizon, ATT, Comcast and others are in the process of trying to get the government to allow them to charge internet companies for using what they have stated as “their net”.

Once these proposals become reality, these companies will build upon them to extend their control over the internet. This could lead to regulations that extend the charges to individual email and limit the ability to charge for email to specific websites like Yahoo and AOL. It could also lead to censorship if the email sites decide to limit the content of what is being sent or charge more for content it doesn’t agree with (it will cost more if it can be classified as a political endorsement). You are already seeing some of this censorship happen with Google and China.

This is getting pretty serious, if we don’t fight back now everybody but these big companies and their political supporters lose.

I think this is rediculous. If I am not mistaken, most companies use their own email servers. This is just going to make them want to use one even more. I’ve even gone so far as to deny services to known muslim extremists in my business, which I gladly and willingly do and will continue to do so. I dont know what the fuss is all about - Ive never used Yahoo or AOL. AOL especially have always annoyed me about when you install thier cr*p it basically takes over your PC. My sister is on AOL and she never gets emails or newsletters sent by me so the spam system is buggered anyway.
If companies start charging for emails to be sent, its simple, people will sign-off and go somewhere else. Spam emailers will indeed utilise this nice idea of ’straight into inbox’ idea, they will happily pay for the system.. I mean we all get junk mail in the post dont we? They pay for that!
Itll never work.. Ill code my own email system and use my own server before I pay for anything from AOL.

Dont know who was slating Hotmail but I never get spam email? The few I do go straight to my junk box. Seems the best email system Ive used so far but have never used (or even heard of til now) Gmail.

Hi, so ISP’s might start to earn a profit from a service they provide which has been abused by the spammers. I for one think that people should pay for the service they get, but how about paying for the e-mails you receive? Just say no to all of them and you get a cheap service. Download anything and you pay for it.

It would then be your choice as to what you receive, not the bad ISP, not the bad spammer.

  64. Rodney Biddle says:

From a publisher of Association and Community Sites…

I can simply tell you my policy will be to reject users from signing up that have AOL or Yahoo accounts. My same suggestion to clients who have stores.

I have already been asked why my time-sensitive notices come out after they were needed (AOL seems to be adding a several hour delay in some cases). I don’t care to be asked why residents or association members no longer get notices, and I don’t want to be blacklisted by AOL or Yahoo in case I do need to send someone an individual email. So for my lists and customers that use these, I’ll simply let them know I will no longer be sending them notices but they can sign up with another email account.

Besides, my lists are not from paying subscribers, so why should I have to pay to send out free community notices? Sorry AOL and Yahoo, Seee Yaaa…
