Google Launches Free SMS Text Messaging
By Alice Hill
RealTechNews
Talk about minimal. No logo, no muss or fuss, but it’s free and it’s from Google. Not long ago we covered a free SMS text messaging platform called Teleflip that did the same thing, but it captured your message via an email address which made the exchange feel a little less private.
We Say: Google SMS doesn’t use your email but you need to know the carrier of the recipient to get your message through, so no big technical breakthrough here. Teleflip figures out the carrier for you, which is liberating, but you need to use a Teleflip email address.

Beau says:
I’m not sure what is meant by “free” here. My carrier (Verizon) charges 10cents to send a text message from the phone, and 2cents to receive the message (unless the message is from the carrier, such as when the send the confirmation # of my bill payment). For verizon, one can use Vtext.com to send a free text message to any verizon phone…but the recipient still pays the 2cent charge. It’s great for me when texting my girlfriend because rather than pay 12cents per message (10 for me to send, and 2 for her to receive), I only pay 2.
My guess is that Google is providing just another service to send text messages. I hope nobody gets a directory of MTNs and sends out spam on this thing…at 2cents a pop.

It’s my understanding that sending text spam or telemarketing towards cellphones is illegal. Not “kind of” illegal in the sense of the CAN-SPAM joke, but the “we will immediately levy crushing fines upon you” sort of illegal. Anybody confirm this?

And naturally my carrier (US Cellular) is not on the list…

This is not anything new. I’ve been doing this for at least a couple of years by just using any email app and sending to # @ carriers suffix. For example #@tmomail.net

You guys must be big Digg readers. It’s new because Google is doing it now. Yes, yes, yes there have been ways to send txt messages without using your phone for years, but that’s not the point.
I don’t even understand how saying ‘it’s not new’ contributes to the discussion anyway.

Here is the catch. This service will only work if you have the google toolbar installed.
Google Toolbar Command Error
Error Issuing Command to Google Toolbar
The referring page has attempted to issue a command to the Google Toolbar. However, the Google Toolbar either is not present on your system or is not functioning properly.
This may occur as a result of attempting to install the Google Toolbar on a browser which is not supported, such as the AOL Explorer or MSN Explorer.
If you find yourself on this page during an attempt to reinstall the Google Toolbar after having recently uninstalled it, you may need to log out of or restart Windows, then attempt the install again.

That is what the send message command got me.

Interesting… I sent a quick test message to my phone and it came through just fine.
However, I did get the error message you describe, or something like it, but the text message still went through.

Since this is e-mail based, I see a huge gateway for spam here. Being illegal really means nothing here since hiding/changing of e-mail sources seems to be what spammers do best. Maybe I’m wrong here but we’ll see.

I agree with the anger felt on how people think it’s new just because google started doing it. places like peekamo have been doing it for a while. you can even go as far as saying peeakmo is better than the google text service because it’s dedicated to jsut that.
