5 Things Steve Jobs Has Misled Us About In The Last 30 Years

Even if you love or hate Apple, most people seem to fall under the spell of Steve Jobs. He’s charasmatic, energetic, and he loves design in a field where the beige box is king. What’s to hate? But he’s not perfect. Here’s a very thoughtful piece from Jackwhispers on 5 ways Steve was wrong.

We Say: Before you flame us for being haters do the math: 5 time out of 30 years is pretty darn respectable. Go Steve!

1. The Complexity of Upgrading and Repairing Macs

Of all Macs the iBook is by far the worst designed computer Apple has ever made. It looks nice, all the fittings and ports have a tight tolerance construction. But upgrading or replacing the hard drive is difficult at best even for a long time experienced technician such as myself. Practically any part (other than the keyboard, RAM, and airport card) on an iBook is a 1 hour job to replace. On most PC laptops, replacing the hard drive is a matter of 2-4 screws. Same with the optical drive (DVD/CD/Burner.) Just opening the iBook subjects you to accidentally severing a cable that may cost a lot of money and may take weeks to get in for replacement.

2. Too Far Ahead/Behind on Storage and Connectivity Standards

Apple has always been too far ahead of the curve or way behind the curve as far as storage technology and connectivity standards. I was actually happy to see Apple move away from SCSI in the late 90’s and to see them drop the floppy drive. But contrary to that statement, it was a blessing for other companies to continue to produce ways to connect these devices to most every Mac.

Combined with the lack of Parallel (which was substandard to SCSI, but more widely used) prevented the Mac from being seen as “more universal”. You had to buy special printers, hard drives, and scanners … that cost more and were only sold in specialty stores.

Okay, first the story on Ellison (yes, he needs a kick in the…), now it’s Jobs. To complete the circle we need Gates to be hammered by someone (too easy to find. It is an international sport, isn’t it?). Then it’s Scott McNealy’s turn.

For McNealy we can always go to the January story in the Register where he prophesizes the cell phone evolving into an iPod killer by connecting people back to their network saved music files. (I’ve yet to see cell service so clear, reliable AND inexpensive that I’m going to be able to stay connected to my PC all the time.) He sounded a bit envious in the article. A little competitive with Jobs? See? A circle! We’re back to Jobs!

Wow. Is it just me, or is this more a critique (and a whiny, barely coherent one at that) of Apple in general than of Steve? Blaming the megahertz myth and the G5 fiasco on Steve is one thing; blaming ADB and SCSI on him? Not a chance (those both happened after he *left*, and it would seem the author’s main complaint about them is “they’re not USB and FireWire, so they suck” — get a sense of history, won’t you?!)

And what does the iBook being hard to service have to do with Steve? It’s a low-end model and wasn’t meant to be serviced by end users. Preferring the Pismo is is fine, but the author really shouldn’t act like this is one of the all-time computer design horrors.

Lee: You’ve never taken a iBook apart, have you? Regardless, the writer says: “…even for a long time experienced technician such as myself.” I read item #1, and smiled. Somebody gets it!

Remember the Newsweek cover photo of Stevie JoBS, “iCon”. Thoroughly appropriate concidering the CON in iCon. Stevie JoBS is the biggest BS artist in the history of the computer circus. The author clearly forgot some memorable Stevie JoBS lies, yes I said LIES.

#6 - This one cost Apple hefty in court - Stevie said at MWSF 1999 “OS X 10.1 will fully support ALL G3 Macs we’ve made” That was the BIG LIE because a HALF Million plus G3 iMacs and a Quarter Million G3 PowerBooks WEREN’T supported by OS X 10.1!!! (I have one each!)

#7 - Apple, i.e. Stevie JoBS oft claims “Apple is the great Innovator”. WHOA! That was a BIG WHOPPER!
    - Apple likes to claim that the Newton was the first PDA, NOT! “Did you know the Psion 1, introduced in 1984 was recognized as the first PDA?” (Source about.com)
    - Apple likes to claim it had the first digital camera, the QuickTake 100. In actuality, Kodak did, and infact the QuickTake was MADE FOR Apple by Kodak and was nothing more than a rebadged Kodak, made in Japan.
    - The “First” all-in-one computer was NOT the Mac, nor the iMac … It was the Compaq, Kaypro and Osborne, which were also the first portables (sorry Apple again).
    - Apple touted, until lately of course, the “Innovated use of the RISC Processor, but Oh oh Apple wasn’t first be a long shot …… the first was the Data General Nova minicomputer, designed in 1968.
    - Stevie memorably pranced about the MWSF Keynote stage proclaiming Apple’s INNOVATIVE new MP3 player the iPod, but NOT SO FAST, …. the first, as it WAS pocket sized was the world’s first mass-produced hardware MP3 player was Saehan’s MPMan, sold in Asia starting in the late spring of 1998. It was released in the United States as the Eiger Labs MPMan F10/F20 (two variants of the same device) in the summer of 1998, a few months before the Rio. http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6450_7-5622055-1.html just for the doubting Thomases.
    - That brings us to the latest Appple “Innovation”, the MacIntel …. all that has to be said, MacIntel: “Think Just Another Me TOO PC”.

#8 - Back to the iPod, the great LIE continues, 12 hours of play time and batteries that last for years …. Ah, Apple lost another lawsuit of both of those claims (and yes, I have a 1st and 2nd gen iPod with dead batteries in both, 3 months after the warranty expired).

#9 - The MacIntel is 4x, 10x whatever JoBS has claimed, is more pure BS (as in JoBS) as early benchmarking has shown very disapointing results …. along with the news that the Intel Core Duo has over 40 Design Erratums (Flaws), which many are saying may be three times as many in reality.

#10 - and last, Apple Computer Company isn’t. Stevie really is only interested in the Apple iPod, iTunes MS and Disney Company …. you just watch.

#11 OH WAIT! I just can’t let this one get by. Apple HASN’T MADE ANYTHING of their own since 1998. Their last assembly plant in the US, near Sacramento, was closed in that year! Apple was one of THE FIRST to outsourse ALL manufacture to Japan at first, then Taiwan, then Korea (all G3 iMacs) and now the 25 cent per hour sweatshops of China. So much for mister limousine Liberal Stevie JoBS care for the American worker.

    Greetings, Apple Kool Aid Drinkers!

Not sure why some people hate Apple so much, what did they do to you Blueskyming!
Some of your points might be valid, but I’ve never heard the Newton touted as the first PDA, maybe ahead of it’s time as far as the writing recognition tecnology (I had many different Psion organiser by the way, so wouldn’t say i’m biased to Apple)

Also the iPod was never touted as being the first as Archos were also producing HD jukebox players before Apple, it’s just iPod was the first to be don’t right.

But even if you are right on a couple of thes points then who cares, or I should say why does it matter to you so much. maybe you need to talk to someone about this! Samaritans maybe!

If the Kodak Camera was made in conjunction with Apple then maybe lously they can still to be first!

I hate Apple because I got screwed with a boat anchor when I had an Apple II. Had I bought a PC JR., I would have least had the legitimate ability to take my software to another upgraded platform. The IPod, done right?!? I don’t think so. Non-user replaceable batteries is the definition of stupid design. That’s not even mentioning the bloated junky I-crap software you *have* to use to interface with the player. Fortunately there are hacked versions, but why should you have to resort that in the first place? It should be drag, drop, and play.

You don’t have to use Itunes to interface with an Ipod. I just got through moving some songs from my workstation to my wifes’ Ipod…with Amarok. (Plug and play, drag and drop, voila!)
