IE7 Beta 2 Preview Security Vulnerabily Discovered

It’s been about 24 hours since the Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Public Preview was released, and it’s time to say … oops. Security researcher Tom Ferris says he has found a vulnerability in the release. It’s in the URLMON.DLL and can either crash the browser or allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code when the DLL encounters a URL with the “file://” protocol followed by a long string of dashes (around 344 according the advisory). We Say: Microsoft has been notified already, but this is certainly not an auspicious start to the public beta 2!

Hmm, sounds pretty serious to me. I just downloaded the Beta 2 Preview and I think it looks very promising. One thing I’m really liking about it is the way it handles RSS feeds. If Microsoft can just make it as secure as Firefox then I may switch back to IE once IE 7 comes out in finished form.

Although I am anxious to try the new IE, I think I’ll wait until it gets completely out of Beta. Issues such as this - I’m sure - won’t be convered via Windows Update, and I still am not sure if it will be compatible with my Google Toolbar and/or the MicroSoft “DevToolbar” - both of which I use quite frequently.
If I was sure (at least) that the toolbars would work - I may think about trying it, though. To expose this vulnerablility I expect that you’d have to be visiting some nefarious sites…

After finding out Norton AntiVirus 2006 unable to excess although it complete loaded during startup, I suspect the antivirus probably not running. Sound vulnerable to me, finally I uninstall IE 7 Beta2.
