Samsung’s Pocket Sized SP-P300ME Projector Is Stunning

Drools……wipes mouth, looks longingly out the window. That’s what happened to me when I caught a glimpse of Samsung’s SP-P300 pocket sized projector with an equally pocket sized price tag of $889. As in under $1,000. Carl Zeis lens. Need I go on?
Despite its size, Samsung’s SP-P300ME boasts an impressive battery life of 2.5 hours, 25 ANSI Lumen brightness (hardly a home cinema projector - Ed!), 1000:1 contrast ratio and 25dB fan noise. Designed to meet the needs of the business and home user, the SP-P300ME will also likely become the ultimate fashion gadget for gaming enthusiasts and design-driven business users. We Say: Why cap the resolution at 800×600? That’s a heart-breaking deal breaker, but if you plan to watch movies at home, this may still be just the ticket.

Well, this might be a good replacement/alternative for those that need one, but I’m not holding out for one just yet. I’ll wait for 2nd or 3rd generation of the LED projectors. I’ve just bought a newly designed LED flashlight that pumps out 1.5 watts
(focused into a spotlight type beam with razor sharp definition)
It uses a new type of LED known as a Luxeon Star, and I believe that this projector uses the same type (maybe the more powerful Luxeon Star 5 watt model?) of LED. Brightness levels are more noticable relative to ambient light levels when you only have one output color, so the flashlight comparison may be faulty. You might have to place this new projector next to a traditional projector to show the obvious differences between the two technologies…
All in all, LED’s are the way illumination is going these days, they’re cheaper, use far less power, and last longer. Some giant LED’s have heat dissipation issues (hence the fan cooling in this unit) but like all electronic devices, continous development will eventually solve that problem as well.
The day is coming very soon when we’ll have flat white LED ceiling nanopaint in the paint aisle at Home Depot… trust me, I see it happening.
