Teleflip Sends Free SMS Text Messages Via Email to Any US-Based Phone Number

I love text messaging, but that’s because I use a Blackberry with an actual keyboard - I know there are people who can tap-tap-tap their messages on a numeric dial pad, but it ain’t me, babe. But when I am the office or my laptop somewhere, I often wish I could just text a message right from my email, and not have to fish out my Blackberry and do it from there. Before you firestorm me with email, yes, I know that there have always been ways to do this, but the process was cumbersome or required special software.

Today I found a site called Teleflip that lets you use Outlook or whetever email client you prefer to SMS anyone in the USA. Yes, that’s the catch: it’s US-based only for now, but it’s FREE and it works.

Teleflipâ„¢ started when the founder became increasingly frustrated at his inability to send text messages to friends’ cell phones from his PC. It was of course possible, but you had to know the cell phone provider, the correct domain name and the correct syntax for the email address. There had to be an easier way….Teleflipâ„¢ was born.

How to Send a Message:
(cellphonenumber)@teleflip.com

So if your number is 415-555-1212 you enter:
4155551212@teleflip.com

I wonder how they make money. I’m thinking maybe they get a small commission from the phone companies for sending the text messages (since most people’s phone services charge for received messages). It sounds like a neat service in any case, but I’ve never used text messaging myself.

    Nice idea.

Become the middle man in messaging. You get two e-mail addresses for each message sent. The senders and the SMS e-mail address. Plus you get to read the messages being sent through you.

(iii) Teleflip reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disclose, sell or otherwise release your personal information to any Affiliate, but the Affiliate will be bound to this Privacy Policy as existing at the time of such event.

(ii) Upon such approval, Teleflip may disclose, sell for its own account or otherwise release your personal information: (a) to third parties with an interest in contacting you for purposes of promoting goods and services that may be of interest to you; and (b) for any other commercial or lawful purposes that serve our business needs and/or the needs or interests of Users.

Thus they plan on spamming you?

Also, what is to stop someone from sending spam through this service to my cell phone?

The guy from Teleflip says that you register with them and make a ‘whitelist’ such that only messages from addresses on the whitelist go to your phone- hence, no spam. They say they will only put a small ad at the bottom of your message starting about a year from now. The guy did have the same look as the guy who sold my grandmother those underwater burial services in the Atantic (…cool temperature and a nice view of the fish…) not mentioning that the casket was an oil drum with some concrete blocks.

I found an even cooler site called http://www.enotifyme.com it allows me to convert my email to voice and listen to it on any landline or mobile phone and I can reply by voice back to the originating sender. They also allow ‘cascading’ so I can selectively have emails reach me at home, then on my cell as a text message, then at the office and so on - kind of the ICQ version of what teleflip’s 1 trick pony approach.

the whitlist is part of telemail (from teleflip)… it about recieving emails to your phone. the sendning out service is called flipout ….

i guess that makes teleflip more then a “one trick pony”….sounds more like at least 2 tricks.

    Teleflip is no longer working!

On August 12, 2008 Chief Executive Tony Davis e-mailed subscribers that the company, which at one time had as many as 25 employees, was shutting down its services and would explore selling its technology.[1]

As of September 6, 2008 the official Teleflip website was non-functional and SMS message delivery failed.
