We recently covered Samsung’s OLED displays from the CES show, and just noticed that Toshiba is set to launch televisions with a display type that rivals plasma sets. The flat-panel technology is called surface-conduction electron emitter display (SED). Toshiba has been working with Canon on this technology; Canon provided the electron-emission and microfabrication technologies. We can hope to see SED televisions under full production in 2006 at a minimum of 50″. Toshiba claims that SED screens will provide better quality and lower power consumption than plasma displays. Well… obviously, we have to wait and see who turns out to be right.

Sam says:
I was wondering when the price range for these products are coming out. The downfall of plasma wasn’t its quality but its price and difficulty in manufacturing. We’ll have to see how Toshiba rolls these TVs out.
