Free Evening Cellular Calls Don’t Go Over Well in Bangladesh

Cell Phone

Bangladesh has ordered phone companies to eliminate free late evening calls from their cellular phone plans. The government states that the unlimited minutes corrupt its youth, impacting studies while changing the behavior of young people.

In the mainly Muslim and deeply conservative country, where dating is discouraged, parents complained to the telecoms regulator, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC), that the free night calls were changing their children’s behavior.

“The commission has taken the decision following a flurry of complaints by parents against such free late-night facilities,” a commission official said on Monday. Source: Reuters via Yahoo! News

We Say: The evening calls are not quite so liberal (no pun intended) as in the U.S., as the free calls don’t start until midnight, and lasts until 6:00 AM, so I could see that’s going to keep people up waaay later than perhaps might be healthy. As you might guess, this policy has not gone over well with youth.

I always point to these countries as a path we (the U.S.) is headed toward with our conservatism, but unfortunately the ones I argue with would retort “They have it right!”

My free calls start at 9:00pm on Verizon. I think that’s a pretty good deal. Cell phones are corrupting the youth? Give me a break!

this is BTRC.. this is Bangladesh & this is the typical Bangladeshi mentality! they did’nt connected with submarine cable a decade ago.. just thinking of [our valuable data will pass away!]

nothing is impossible in this country.. we all are free enough [free means freedom not free calls!] to “make/offer packages”, “get/buy packages” and finally “make other order/bound to stop packages..”

This is ridicules! This is done by the corrupted ignorant politicians; they do not have a clue on how to run a country to prosper. They are pro monopoly, against competitions.

i have to say i agree. its not bangladeshi mentality that someone mentioned earlier its actually true. im witness to it. i have relations in bangladeh and ive seen these late night conversations start corrupting our youths. it starts out innocent and where there is limited intermingerling of opposite sexes to speak over a phone is very convenient place to have fun.
