Microsoft Ships First Vista Critical Security Updates

Windows Vista

Still Beta? Doesn’t matter. These are critical patches, so Microsoft released them this weekend. They are for the Windows Vista December CTP (Community Technology Preview) and Windows Vista Beta 1. The patches address the Windows Metafile vulnerability patched over a week ago for Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 Server.

We Say: Just like the earlier patches for the other OSes, go get ‘em. This is a pretty severe vulnerability. It’s interesting that the Microsoft Security Bulletin for the WMF vulnerability made no mention of Vista, and these patches were released over a week later than the prior ones. We probably could have guessed that the offending “SetAbortProc” code had been ported to Vista, though.
