39 Megapixel Hasselblad Digital Camera

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

Life is filled with choices, and many are financial. Fancy restaurant or peanut buter sandwich and money for a new roof repair. Affordable TV or all-out HD LCD for the Super Bowl followed by years of credit card debt. But here’e one most of us won’t be wrestling over: 39 megapixel Hasselblad digital camera or new BMW.

The medium-format H2D-39 features a 2.2-inch OLED display, on which you can view your 78MB shots. You need not really despair about storage space though — this monster of a camera supports tethered hard drives. Look for lots of other goodies like new color-correction technology. If you’re wondering about pricing, the H2D will run you about $31,000. The CF-39MS will make an even bigger dent in your wallet, priced at about $40,000. So, get yourself the world’s premier medium-format 39-megapixel DSLR… or buy a Bimmer. Source: Mobilemag

We say:…..nothing. We are drooling. But this does mean that we will all eventually have this technology. It’s just a matter of time price-wise. And that is NOT true when it come to the BMW. Gotta love tech!

I fail to see the application at the moment. Apart from very large billboards, why? I have a 8mp camera and I rarely use it to it’s potential.

For that price this had better have more than 8-bit color resolution per channel such as float-16.

    you goofballs

this camera is aimed at the pro photog market - where it’ll likely be used for the SI Swimsuit edition and VS catalogs.

most pro photogs will rent this from a camera rental house.

this camera WAS not designed for taking pix of the grandkids at christmas. no tunless you’re gonna post’em on a billboard.

It’s only a matter of time before this thing becomes affordable for the retail consumer.

About 3 years ago, a 1GB flash drive was selling for about US$900. I think you get them now for $100.

i have a 4.1 megapixel camera and i don’t use it to it’s entire potential, and they take too much space. 1 mega shots are enough for 4×6 prints and that’s all i ever need, well unless i get serious into banner printing :D

You all are jealous. If you could afford this camera you would. Bunch of bums. I’ve taken about a dozen pictures with this camera and I can say it’s great. You can see into the pores in someone’s skin. Now if you all would get off of your liberal welfare asses and get a real job, you could afford something like this. Thanks for your time.

You know which ones I’m talking about.
Look, I’m still here and I’m waiting for the day. I watched the launch, saw them use the cameras. Then they -abandoned-
them after using them LESS than several days. Just plain left them there just laying around like trash after the carnival leaves. Just think of the value just sitting there. Free. (well, unless the government reworks the rules)
Now we hear about Virgin’s plans for the future, and it looks like I may live long enough to make it there (I hope).
Let’s see, I get rid of all but the best on Ebay, and maybe nail down a cool 12-13 million for the buggy at Barret-Jackson’s car auction.
Yep, I could enjoy the camera….

    January 16th, 2006 at 11:07 am

  67. Steve says:

    1. High quality lenses are important at that resolution - cheap lenses - plastic or glass - which are on most digital cameras, will not be allowed. This is a different world where the lenses have to be very pure.

    2. A starting resolution much higher than 72 dpi can still give large benefits when displayed in 72dpi

    2. the Nikon D200 will be out soon and will to 10 mega pixels. That one is only $1,600 retail. Soon it will be

  76. Geir says:

You will NEVER have this kind of technology available without paying premium dollar. Sure, electronics will get cheaper, but good optics will get even more expensive than today. What you WILL end up with is 78 MP of blur, that even after scaling down will look distorted and with bad depth focus because size and price will always prevail before optical quality.

Well, film cameras are officially dead. Used to be no matter how good the digital camera, you could still get a higher quality image with a medium-format camera like a flim hasselbad. Now that you can do it digital, there’s absolutely no need for film.
Wish I had the $$ for it. I’ve already stopped using my fild Minolta in favor of my digital SLR minolta. Still have a medium-format yashica-mat but it’s all manual and too damn hard to use fro much

    January 19th, 2006 at 7:44 pm

  79. you are all retarded says:

um… yeah, that camera wasn’t made for you folks w/ the snapshot digitals. Like most hasselblad’s the market is mainly commercial photographers. I.E. people who make a living taking pictures. They spend money like that because they’ll make money with the equipment. Furthermore, w/ respect to price decreases… the hasselblad equipment is gonna get better, but probably not cheaper. Hasselblad, like BMW, has a ridiculous premium attached to its name. True, the optics are a huge portion of cost w/ a camera, but w/ cameras like these, you generally buy the lens separately. The cost of this camera lies mainly in the digital back, which is meant for studio use anyway…

  81. Logic says:

And also siding with most of the people who know what their talking about:

This camera is a Hassleblad. Which translates to “for professionals that know what they are doing, and make 6 figures doing it”. That’s pretty much been the story of hassleblad’s life. Even the the most rich people who are “casual” shooters and buy the 8000$ EOS 1DS mark II for the hell of it, wouldn’t touch this camera. If you are not a serious professional, this camera is not for you.

This technology will not be available for the general snapshooter, or at least not at this caliber. Example: compare a 6 megapixel medium-format back to any less than 800$ 8 megapixel camera today. Guaranteed the medium format back will blow the 8mp crap camera out of the water.

This camera has the same advantage that every medium format camera has had over small format (35mm, consumer digital) and the reason why it’s for pros is better image flexibility and usage possibilities. You can shoot a full body portrait with this and crop a headshot out of it and have it look perfect. And it’s what most image buyers are looking for in the industry.

“Awesome full body shot, but we like the facial expression so we’ll just crop it for our full poster-size ad. Oh, you shot it with an 8mp sony 828? sorry, we’ll take our buisness elsewhere”

Don’t do product shots or high-end weddings for a living? Don’t even look at this camera.

I have used this camera… And I LOVE it… I wished it were mine! I covet it badly :) )
However what makes me cream for it is the work by a professional photographer here in Dubai/UAE who recently published an A3 Photographic Portfolio volume of full-page portraits in monochrome… The work IS STUNNING!
… And “Yes” - its also expensive. VERY expensive. Perhaps TOO expensive for most people and for myself I could not warrant the investment for the kind of work that I do…
Hopefully it will, like all other digitals, come down in price… I have 2 Nikon D1Xs from 3 years ago - now I have just “replaced” them with 2 Nikon D200s - BETTER cameras at 1/3rd the price. So lets all hope that the next generation Hasselblads will reflect this kind of logic.
But “Damn!” - those pics really ARE effing magnificent!

You dont see why someone would want to buy this? Well, when was the last time you were at a shoot and got the perfect shot of a part of someone or something but when you blew it up to the size you needed (in the case of this camera…a 18 wheeler ad or a billboard) it was not clear because the pixels started to show? It happens to me a few times a month.

When you have a camera that can give you the BEST quality, its going to cost you. HOWEVER, thats when you charge the customer twice as much as you would have charged with your 12.5 MPX Canon/ Nikon. They want the best file with the higest resolution, they have to pay for it.

Stop being such idiots and just appreciate the camera for what it is, an awesome thing for a lot of money

As an armature Photographer, it took me a lifetime and fortune to get a used Hasselblad. Ironically, I cannot use it for lack of films, replacement batteries and quality processing, which have become obsolete.Going to its Digital version would require reincarnation!
Hasselblads certainly do not care about ordinary armature camera enthusiasts.

I tested this camera out yesterday. The company I work for is thinking of getting one. I can say that this camera is really amazing but is far overkill for most applications. By the way, more MP doesnt just mean a bigger image…it has a lot to do with the way colors and fine details are rendered. You could shoot the same scene with a 3 MP and with this camera and print 4×6’s…that does not mean they will look the same.

This is the best camera. I have taken a few pics and uploaded into a site.
Site closed down due to download time requried to pick picture. People with T1 links can have a look at photos. TO process a simple photo, you need Adobe speical Photo Permier Pro (40+) edition, as it will load the average photo of 60MB. And in case yuo take a scenery with beautiful colour, buy youself a new harddrive. I will post more comments as I have to carry this huge camera to Himalayas to capture them end to end.
Better they can send to to moon, nice photos of Earth from there….. but hey, how will they tranfer the damn load.
    No one thought.

Using this camera is like using Bullet train to go to school two blocks away… not for kids/grown ups either… only for the WORLDS BEST PHOTOGRAPHERS! And that’s me.

Hey i think i got one of these for christmas last year. not sure! … maybe i was too drunk to remember..or maybe that was the thing that fell down the stairs and it showed one or two dead pixels, after which i had to kick it! Didnt really work so someone had the idea of playing some football with it..,that was kinda cool. well it sure was a great day. But hey since all of you think this is such a great camera, i think i will ask one again next year, get into photography and all. sounds good. make some money on my own, photograph some nice babes. yeah. but i need also a backup system right. so i guess i’ll ask a whole set with one backup. would be nice. ok well take care now and donate to 3rd world. now i will fuck my hasselblad in the ass. thx

  109. Chris says:

When you think about it, 39 MB is not outlandish. The sensor is 5412 x 7212 pixels and if every one of them is for image recording, then the resulting prints will be about 18″ x 24″ at 300 dpi.

I recently sold some photos taken with a 5 MP Nikon 5700 that were to be reproduced at 15″ x 20″ and, let me tell you, it took a lot of work in PhotoShop to get results that were barely acceptable. Even with all my work, some of the images just could not take all the teaking and were not useable reproduced at that size.

As far as scanning an 8 x 10 on a drum scanner, an 8000 pixel scanner would cost you upwards of $15,000 and add a whole lot of hassle to your workflow what with photo processing, scanning, etc.

For those of you that say Ansel Adams would not touch this camera and that unless a latent image is bound to silver crystals it cannot be art, get real. A.A. used the best technology of his time and art is independent of the medium.

No, this is not a camera intended for the average amateur, but for the pros with a need for this state-of-the-art camera.

Just what is a “farker”, anyway?

After scanning through most of these posts, I’ve concluded that most of the writings here are downright senseless. Too bad. Now you guys got me wondering what a “farker” is instead of pondering the merits of a 39MB file! Oh well !

Hearing about this camera IS making me drool profusely… all I have is my crappy little 3.2 mega pixel camera phone… its OK and it DOES take decent photos, but nowhere near as decent as I know this camera will…
I long for the day when Hasselblad slash the prices way down so that us student-types can afford them…

I swear, if I was in a dilemma where I’d have to sleep with someone to get the camera… I’d do it. I’d just shut my eyes and think of the amazing resolution….

I took around half a million photos with an ELM and FC2,000. Mostly aerial but also wedding, portraiture and press reportage. The FC was one of the first and did give some trouble but the proven ELM went and just kept on going. Enlargements to 54 inches square were as sharp in the corners as the middle. I received reportage work over more experienced reporters because the quality of photos was far better than that on 35mm. Am retired now. Sold my gear to a second hand dealer and got a very good price. Would really love one of these. Wake up you scoffers. If you want the best, buy the best!

This camera is one of the best cameras on the market. one of the features i like is hits full fram shots. i can tell that most of you dont have a clue about cameras and the most part this camera will be rented or bought by media comapnies that can afford it.

This camera has a range of color setting that most Digital SLR’s dont have.

now theres a new camera out called The H3D-II is the 4th generation of the Hasselblad H-system even better than film its self. so stop all the babby cry shit . im a pro fotog and if i had money for this camera it would be mine. but i dont see any reason to buy it since my company rents it all the time. peace
