Intel Drops Pentium Branding

This is really no surprise, as Intel seems entrenched in rebranding itself, as we described late last year and, the brand had already disappeared from mobile CPUs. However, it was still part of the desktop CPU line, but now that’s going too.

TG Daily says that sources indicate that “that Intel will drop the Pentium name without making a major announcement, but simply transition to processor names such as ‘Intel D 920′ or ‘Intel 672′ without introducing a new brand.” More details at TG Daily.

We Say: I was actually surprised earlier when they dropped it from the mobile line but not the desktop line. It didn’t really make sense, but still, I’m not sure how well this will be received. Apparently, OEMs are not happy with this, and I checked a news forum I frequent and they’re surprised there also. Frankly, it’s a lot easier to look at a PC and remember the CPU is a 3.6 GHz P4EE (or even a 3.6 GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition in longhand) than an Intel D 920.
