Valve Angry at Unauthorized In-Game Counter-Strike Ads

Counter-Strike Ad

A vague press release by Engage In-Game Advertising is definitely going to lead to some issues with Valve Software. The press release heralded the campaign of in-game advertising (for Subway) in the most popular online action game played among men 18 to 34. The game wasn’t named in the press release, but it turns out the game was Counter-Strike.

The problem isn’t in-game advertising itself … that’s not new, although to Counter-Strike it is. The problem is that, according to Valve, they were not consulted.

Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi: “At no time did Valve grant permission nor discuss these advertisements with Engage. As such, this is now a legal matter. Advertising or any other commercial use of our games requires our written permission.” Source: ShackNews

We Say: According to the ShackNews article the actual technology involved was provided by IGA International; it appears deals were made directly with server admins. Still, there’s little doubt there will be a dust-up over this.

  4. » Valve Starts Testing In-Game Ads for Counter-Strike » Blog Archive   Alice Hill’s Real Tech News - Independent Tech says:

[…] Apparently gamers can now see Valve’s test ads for themselves if they add the line “-beta cs” to the launch options of their Counter-Strike executable. A few of them have already done so and taken some screenshots of what these new ads look like. As you can see from the example in this story, the ads in their current state are incredibly obtrusive, and users have also reports drops in their frame rates, though I have not verified these claims. These changes are not yet in Counter-Strike by default, so there is still hope the Valve will reconsider its decision. It is more than a little ironic that Valve, which was angered by third-party attempts to place ads in its game previously by some server administrators.
