Dell Has Foot-in-Mouth Disease with Regards to Bird Flu

By Michael Santo

Sorry, it’s just too hard to pass this one up. It should be obvious to most people that the subject of avian flu should be treated with a measure of respect and sensitivity. It seems this fact has escaped Dell CEO Kevin Rollins, who, speaking at the same luncheon where he discussed the possibility of Dell using AMD CPUs, indicated that he felt a bird flu outbreak would be good for business, since “”We deliver to homes. People don’t have to come to stores.”

During the SARS epidemic, “our business in China boomed,” he said, because people were either quarantined or sequestered themselves at home in order to avoid coming in contact with the deadly virus.

The same thing could happen again if there’s a bird-flu epidemic, Rollins said. Source: Reuters

We Say: I’m glad to see Dell made a decent profit off the SARS epidemic … seriously, I’m sure (hope?) Rollins just had a minor brain disconnect, but still … like I said, I couldn’t resist this.

I understand that you “couldn’t pass this up”, but you left some other things he said about bird flu… take a look at the link below to see what else he said.

Bob, I saw that, but I actually thought it made Dell look worse. It seems to imply what’s scary to Dell is trying to handle the factory problems anc call center problems.

UncaMarty, that’s right, but (and I tried to downplay this to not cast too bad a light on Dell), I don’t see other companies saying how great their business will be in the event of a bird flu outbreak, which would result in millions of … well, you know. And it’s a little insensitive of Rollins to say that.

You know, one thing people don’t think about … a survey showed up to 40% of people in the US would not go into work if a bird flu outbreak occurred. i’m not sure Dell would have as many delivery people as they might think … (this was a U.S. figure but I doubt it would differ much around the world in the event of a pandemic)
