Spammers Send New Message … to Message Boards

As I’ve previously said, despite what the FTC tells us, I have not seen a decrease in the amount of spam I receive. Despite this, I was still surprised to discover that apparently message board spam has increased to unheard-of levels.
Domains such as 888.typo7.com, e-casinoroom.com, HobbyWorkshop.com, onlinepokerment.com, TopSitesRanking.com and g4h5.com all appear in bogus postings which reference online gaming. Many of the actual sites link through to more than one established poker site.
Typical comments often start with some fairly random text, such as “Good guess Smith” or “I agree with John”, which looks like an attempt to appear part of an existing conversation on the board. They then include little more than links through to the Web sites, backed up with crude testimony such as “This is a great poker site”, despite the fact none of the above offer any kind of gaming on their own domain.
A second trend is also apparent with these domains. The Whois information for every single one of those websites named above reveals the same registrant in each case–Moniker Privacy Services, part of domain name registrar Moniker.com, based in Florida.
However, Monte Cahn, the CEO of Moniker.com, told silicon.com Moniker Privacy Services does not actually operate the sites but is simply the default registrant for its customers who, for whatever reason, want to operate anonymously. Source: ZDNet
We Say: I can see why the actual registrants would want to be anonymous. I haven’t really seen any message spam at the sites I visit. Perhaps it’s because the message boards I visit are mostly tech-oriented. I am seeing more “comment spam” than I’m used to, at RTN and other blogs. How about you readers? Have you experienced message spam at sites you frequent?

I have two blogs, one for my business and one for joke news articles. They are both based on MT. Over the last two months, there has been an avalanche of comment and linkback spam. It started slow, but over the Christmas Holidays it was getting to be hundreds of links and dozens of bogus comments a day. I bet a lot of webmasters are getting pretty hot about this issue. I know I am.

We are drowning in comment spam. I spend most of my day pulling out drug and porn spam from the comments. It makes me nuts. It takes enough time to try and write a blog and find interesting news but to weed out Cialis comments all day is just beyond infuriating. And we have a pretty amazing spam plugin that catches thousands and thousands more.

I used to get tons of spam on my blog, too, until I turned on the Captcha confirmation. But it’s a step I wish wasn’t necessary.

Look no further than the RTN forums and you see the spammers have signed up in droves. There have been a few spam posts even though the forum is mostly inactive.
