Keep-Away with Cell Phone Proves Too Much to Chew (Updated)

Ordinarily, reading this, I would immediately think, “I have to run this by Snopes!” But I didn’t get it from a friend in email, and it’s been on AP as well as the local newspaper for the city, so this isn’t an urban legend.
A woman, involved in an argument with her boyfriend, decided she didn’t want him to have access to his cell phone. So, bright person that she was, she decided swallowing it was the best way to accomplish this.
Police said they received a call at 4:52 a.m. Friday from a Blue Springs (Mo.) man who said his girlfriend was having trouble breathing. When they arrived at the house they found the 24-year-old woman had a cell phone lodged in her throat.
“He wanted the phone and she wouldn’t give it to him, so she attempted to swallow it,” Detective Sgt. Steve Decker of the Blue Springs Police Department. “She just put the entire phone in her mouth so he couldn’t get it.” AP via ABC News
Updated: An update today, 12/26, indicates this may not have been what it first appeared to be.
Police have a suspect in the bizarre incident that sent the 24-year-old woman to the hospital last week, Sgt. Allen Kintz said. Police would not say whether the boyfriend was the suspect and would not explain exactly what they believe happened.
“It appears she didn’t voluntarily swallow this phone,” Kintz said. “It’s not quite the way it was first portrayed.” Source: AP Via SFGate
We Say: First, I hope she is OK; I’ve tried searching for more info, but I couldn’t find any. Second, I was wondering what kind of phone it was since I can think of plenty that won’t fit into your mouth that easily. Wonder why she didn’t try to swallow the SIM card instead (maybe it was CDMA)?
Updated: All right, I’d better not see this on Law and Order as something “fictional”. This is real, but it better have an entry in Snopes confirming it because it sure looks like an urban legend!
