Hands-On Review: Nokia’s N90 Smartphone

Before I left for a work-related trip last week, I got a call from Nokia. How would I like to try out the new N90 and report back, they asked? Perfect I said, I am heading to Asia for a week and will be able to do a hands-on review of the phone so many phone aficionados are drooling over. By the next day, the boxed N90 arrived and I quickly popped in my Cingular SIM card and was off to the races.
First the basics. The N90 traveled with me for a week from San Francisco to Hong Kong to Manila and back. In every city/country it shifted seamlessly to the local phone carrier, but alas, I was back to my old San Francisco neighborhood problem that had me abandon my own Nokia a few years ago - poor signal strength. At home I was only able to get the phone to ring once, while my Samsung P777 can actually send and receive calls from my hilltop signal-killing home without a problem.
The second drawback was a size that just was too bulky for easy carrying. Because the phone boasts a 2.0 mega pixel Carl Zeis camera lens (with flash and zoom) it bolts on an awkward rectangular module at one end of the phone that while handy - you can twist it and use the phone’s front panel to take shots, or flip open and rotate the inside screen horizontally– it unfortunately makes opening the phone an odd experience. You pry it open and then flip up one side and then flip down the other to talk. I did like that when paired with a Bluetooth headset, I was able to sit the phone open in a seated position that leaned the screen back while I paced my hotel room, but for those looking for a more “mobile” mobile, the shape and weight is not easy to adjust to. The lack of voice-activated dialing was also a shame since my headset supported it.
Attention Getter
In every country, I have to say this odd phone drew oohs and ahhs from passersby as well as co-workers on my trip. The phone’s camera features were instantly exclaimed over as was the super bright inner screen and strong organizer and phone functions, but most returned the phone to me with the same comment - it’s great, but just too bulky.
Bottom Line: The Nokia N90 is an almost but not quite phone. As a camera it is certainly the best camera phone I’ve seen with superior optics and many ways of getting stills and video on the fly, but alas, at 2 mega pixels, it’s just not a complete digital camera or camcorder replacement. As a smart phone, it too offers an array of features like email handling and scheduling but without a keyboard, it means packing another Bluetooth accessory or tap tap tapping out sentences via the numeric pad. For those looking for something different, the N90 is definitely that, but the so-so battery and signal strength combined with the weight and a bracing $399 - $799 price tag, made it a phone I enjoyed traveling with but wouldn’t want to live with.

I say careful because when you start using words such as “traveling to Asia” and , “…too bulky…”, you are starging to separate yourself from your loyal readers. By that I mean, we don’t all jet hither and yon, business or recreationally in our day-to-day lives. Most of us are just working stiffs. For myself, I was not impressed all that much with your account of traveling to Hong Kong and Manilla.
If you would have simply said that you use the camera phone while traveling, it would have fallen on more receptive ears.
The word “bulky” doesn’t mean a thing to a person who totes a DSLR camera around everywhere they go. btw - You never did completely explain what “bulky” was.
I still love you and your Web site a bunch, but the lines are drawn taut when you write things in the manner that you wrote of the Nokia N90 Smartphone.

One thing manyof my readers know over time is that I travel *a lot* for my job. Every trip has been captured here from Africa, to Mexico to the Galapagos. I am not bragging, or especially lofty about it. Most business travel in my experience means long airport lines, cramped planes, delays, and being stuck in a conference room with a sore throat. The resaon I was glad to have an Asian trip is that many phones are being sold in the US as “3G” but you need to go to Asia to get the real feel for the 3G network. That is why I was so excited to be able to test out the phone in not one but two Asian countries.
As I proved - the Asian networks were fast and easy to connect to, while I could not get a signal on a phone that priced between $400 and $800 here in the US. And by bulky, I meant in terms of the average US phone today. Most people carry leightweight clamshell phones or sliders like my Samsung P777, or ultra thin models like the very popular Razr. A phone that feels more like my laptop’s power supply is not the same - I too carry heavy equipment: a laptop, chargers, Blackberry, Skype headset, digital camera (non-SLR), travel router, and more. To ask me to substitute my camera or camcorder is just not realistic with this model.
Anyway, I am sorry the review drew some sort of line, but my day job does not pay me to review products, and I at least try and take advantage of my freaky world travel to bring RTN readers a glimpse at what is going on in the world technically. The day a PC Magazine or CNET is willing to fly me to Asia to test out a phone or write about connectivity in South America - then sign me up. Meanhile, I am thankful that my employer lets me write my blog and report on the many rare and wonderful places I have seen with a technical eye.
In my book, anyone who can bring back word from another country is doing us all a favor - we have bloggers now on this site from Greece and Finland and all over - the more we can see, the smarter we all get for free. The key thing for me is to be free to review products in real life - to haul them up San Francisco hills and in airports and cabs, and then report back without a Nokai picking up the tab and then pressuring me to write someting untrue. That’s independence and I hope we can all benefit from the travel without the bad food and coughing strangers!

I found the review just fine. “Bulky” is pretty much an understandable term for describing such devices. As for telling the reader that you were travelling in Asia actually is helpful. It lets us know that you’re actually using the thing internationally, a useful thing to know, since I’m sure some people don’t want to have more than one phome to carry anywhere.
As for seperating yourself from us readers, I’m a laid off IT worker (and grad student) and you didn’t seperate yourself from me. I understand that people have to travel at times for work and pleasure. It’s not like you’re writing a travelogue in this reivew.

Ok, I’ve read many reviews and I guess I need to make a few comments. The phone is set for T-Mobile NOT Cingular so I must assume you also use a hammer to tap in your screws. Use the phone for the carrier selected before judging it’s reception quality.
You use the word “pry it open” ..uh ..to force open with a lever?? Please give me a break.
I request that you and your readers perceive the phone in this manner..
1. Closed it’s a 2MP Camera ..not too big for a 2MP Camera
2. Folded Open it’s a PDA ..not too big for a PDA
3. Twist and Turn and it’s VHS Camcorder..

The N90 camera was just reviewed by some local finnish professional photographers and they even used a N90 photo on a digital camera magazine as a frontpage picture. The camera is excellent, one of the best we have on a phone today. If you know anything about photographing you also know mwgapixels isn´t everything. It´s the lens quality that mattters. And yes the phone is bulky, but what can you expect - a small phone cannot be a good quality camera phone.

This review is as what I’ve read about this phone elsewhere. Bulky is the word. For one thing, there ARE other 2MP camphones without such bulk!
Why does the phone need to follow the carrier? Does it not indicate the phone’s quality as well, as Alice has written well above?
Or you’re actually saying Cingular gives better frequency for Nxx than N90?

I’ve been reading the comments and wanted to answer a few questions that came up. That’s the best part for me about doing a hand-on review in a blog format. Anyone can write questions and coments, and I can actually add more to the dicussion - something you can’t really do in big media.
Anyway, the phone I received from Nokia was not branded for any particular carrier. The reviewer’s instructions said it would accept SIMs from Cingular and I believe T-Mobile, so I popped in my Cingular SIM card and it worked. In terms of signal strength - I thought it was interetstng that the Nokia handset with my same SIM could not get a signal in my home while my Samsung handset could (and my Blackberry). I thought that was worth noting for people in areas with less than ideal coverage.
Next - the phone is definitely fun to twist and the optics are outstanding, but the weight of the unit just feels a bit much. It’s bulky. True, the number megapixels is nto as important as the lens and so on as one readre noted, but my 5 megapixel digital camera can ride along in my bacpack and provide occasional pics for many weeks without needing a charge. The Nokia had to be charged three times while I was travelling - True I used it more because I was away, but I also was trying to keep calling costs down, so it may be about even in terms of average daily use and battry life.
When you go with an all in one device battery life is a key issue for me. My Blackberry was in full use that week and I never charged it until a day after I got back. In th end, the phone was very entcing (as I said it drew stares and oohs and ahs) but the weight and size were just a tad off. Luckily, everythings gets smaller and lighter and better, and I know Nokia will keep innovating this product line. They said they would send more units, so I can’t wai to give another one a try!
And to comenter #5: we desperately need help here. Would you like to be an intern? And do you write?
