Another Blow to RIM

By Mark Evans
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews

So when’s RIM going to settle its four-year patent dispute with NTP? You get the feeling it needs to be pretty soon after Gartner Group that recommended its customers “stop or delay” Blackberry purchases until a settlement is reached. At some point, both sides have got to realize a settlement is in the best interests of both sides so the sooner it’s done, the better.

We Say: Sit down in a locked room and don’t come out until a deal is done.

I wish they would too, but given its cash reserves, this could get far worse before RIM’s ability to pay $1B would be in any jeopardy. After all NTP, doesn’t need RIM to be healthy; it just needs it to be willing to pay $1B (or so). So for now, IMO, it will be happy to inflict as much pain as possible.
