Xbox 360 Crashes Related to Overheating Power Bricks?

Raised Power Brick

As Alice wrote earlier, there have been quite a few reports of Xbox 360 crashes. A poster on GameSpot’s forums seems to have found a fix … raising the power supply (yes, that huge brick) off the ground to maximize cooling.

My 360 was crashing a lot (like once every 20 minutes). So I took the power supply off the ground and suspended it in the air with some string. I have been playing for about 3 hours straight and no crashes so far!

EDIT: I found an easier way to do this. I got a box with no cover and put the power supply on the edges. Source: GameSpot forums

We Say: This isn’t going to be a fix for everyone, but the tip has been making its rounds around a lot of sites (the thread at GameSpot, for one, is very long) and many people say it works. There’s another issue that appears to be very repeatable; using the guide button during loading appears to crash with many games. If the majority of crashes are related to the bricks, hopefully Microsoft will get replacements out soon.

    1. you shouldn’t have to do something like that for a brand new system, especially the power supply.
2 microsoft should have been smart enough to wait a little longer to make sure everything was as close to perfect as it could be.
3 now they are going to have a bunch of people posting complaints and rants all over the internet about problems they are having which is the last thing an expensive new system needs.

Apparently the XBox 360 over here at the dorm doesn’t have much trouble though it did crash a handful of times over the long weekend (or so people say) after hours upon hours of gaming.

Quote from Pica (x-box scene) “Errors are always expected with new hardware. The PlayStation 1 had overheating problems. The PS2 had laser problems. Xbox 1 had DVD drive problems…It’s an expected evil with launch consoles.”

I know new launches of this magnitude always have problems but since a system costs about $400 you would think they would want their customers to be completely satisfied with their purchase, and wouldn’t you think they owed it to their customers. I mean after all people were waiting in huge lines, some even overnight, and waiting all that time to be rewarded with a system that still has glitches, wow thanks. Perros is right though, glitches like this happen with every system, I would imagine that doesn’t make it any less disappointing though.
