FireFox 1.5 Creeps Closer with RC3 (If You Look Hard)
By Michael Santo

As Alice wrote yesterday, FireFox 1.5 is getting very close. Today. two events: First, Microsoft announced that FireFox users can now download files from Microsoft that require Windows Genuine Advantage validation thanks to a new plug-in. Still out of luck when it comes to Windows Update, but FireFox users are getting closer.
Second, FireFox 1.5 RC3 has been released. But, it’s not that easy to find. As I write this, if you go to the Mozilla website, you’ll see it advertised on the front page. But click through, and you still see “Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 2″.
If you click the “Other systems and languages” link … there it is, RC3, but only for English. I’m sure this will change as the night goes on.
We Say: Had to dig hard for it, but for you FireFox aficianados, there it is. It looks like other sites like FileForum are picking up at least the English version. Don’t forget, this is a Release Candidate, not final software.

David Johnston says:
I really can’t wait for 1.5 to come out. I’m currently using RC3 and it’s quite nice. There’s just one site that I’ve been having issues with for every 1.5 build, but I suspect it’s because of a new security measure in Firefox (the login for the site always says the server can’t be found).

For me I used the update feature of FireFox. Look under the Help category then scroll down to Check For Updates. It downloaded RC3 then installed it with no problem what so ever

I’m a huge fan of Firefox so I downloaded and installed this…but as I feared, it doesn’t support all my extensions. I value these more than I do an upgrade, so I uninstalled it and back to my current version. I can wait a while longer…

I too was dissapointed in the extension support. I uninstalled RC3 but now am left with a unstable v1.7 & extensions disabled due to incompatability with RC3. I’ve uninstalled Firefox 1.7, searched “c” crive for Mozilla & Firefox and deleted all files and folders, ran Norton One Button Check to remove any stray registry entries, ran CCleaner, defrag drive, and still fresh install of 1.7 has all old disabled extensions already installed with theme I was using. I even went in and did all this again and used RegCleaner 4.3 to remove any entries entitled Mozilla or firefox……same result, all old extensions installed and old theme! I’ve been a Firefox user since 1.0 but am VERY disturbed at the lengths I am going through to remov ALL of Firefox from my system!

Robert SB: Sounds to me like you didn’t remove your Firefox profile. Copy and paste this into Explorer:
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
It’ll take you right to the FF profiles folder.
And in the future, don’t install a nightly/alpha/beta/RC version over a Final. And if you do install a pre-release, backup your Profiles directory first.

BillBC: That’s something the extension authors need to sort out … they’ve had plenty of notice to update their extensions. The API hasn’t changed since RC1. Unfortuantely it seems like most updates don’t come until after the final version is released.

To Robert SB…I avoid such hassles at times like this because I use GoBack…when I discovered my crucial extensions didn’t work I clicked a couple of times and my computer went back to its state as of 15 minutes before I installed the new version. GoBack is worth its weight in gold for such things….

I tried using XP’s System Restore but it wouldn’t restore for some reason. Is Go Back a Symantec product? I’m just bitter because we all hailed Firefox for its innovation, yet it acts intentionally or not like malicious spyware that isn’t removed on an uninstall and can’t be found with Spybot, Adaware,
Microsoft Spyware, etc. By the way I ran my system restore disk on my Dell 700M laptop and Firefox and I aren’t speaking for now.
