The Most Shocking Moments in Video Games

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

I am a sucker for these types of round-ups, which is why I loved finding The Most Shocking Moments in Video Games from a little blog called MyGadgetBag. I am actually pulling together my own list of Surprising moments in video games, because the time someone drove a Trans Am across the screen in Age of Empires (thanks to a wily hack) and when I discovered that you could get in a cab and ride somewhere else in Leisure Suit Larry have to be moments I will never forget - but not shocking in the same way this guy is talking. In the meantime, though, enjoy his round-up. And share your most shocking and/or surprising moments below and let’s get a list going. (Note: one explicit pic when you click to the full round-up.)

The first time your entire family died in Oregon Trail.

As a fifth grader; this game was the greatest. You basically take your family through the wilderness to get to the west during pioneer times in the United States. The shocking moment in this game was when your family died off due to some strange illness that a fifth grader couldn’t comprehend. Why the hell did my family just die from Dysentery? What the hell was Dysentery? These moments shocked me, and also made me quite angry when I was in fifth grade.

    Hey Alice,

Great find, but you shouldn’t support MGB. They ran a bunch of those “4free” sites then closed up without giving out any of the gifts, basically taking everyones money. They won’t respond to anyone’s e-mails either. Not cool.

I’m not surprised to see Aeries’ death at the #1 shocker. It’s really the only moment in gaming that has left me truly stunned … I spent the rest of the game expecting some sort of glorious resurrection that never came.

    :(

Speaks well for the game’s character development, though.

Doom was a good pick, too. Many the “OH CRAP!” moment.

For Me it was Alternate Reality The City and its in-game weather. The first time it rained and started with lightning and thunder I was startled. This was back in 1985 and I never saw a game that had changing weather patterns let alone in a first person game.

Oregon Trail.. Hahahaha… I’d kill my driver just so I could leave offensive comments on the cross. Loved that 5 1/2 floppy drive action.

My most shocking moment was playing Civilization 1, some 15 years ago. I had the American empire and was concentrating on attacking the British on another continent. Suddenly the Russians attacked my empire from a hidden area that I had wrongly assumed was just an empty ocean area.
