Microsoft Tools to Detect, Remove Sony “Rootkit”

Sony isn’t shipping any more CDs with its controversial copy protection, but there are probably still plenty of PCs out there “infected” with the software. Yesterday, Microsoft announced on a corporate web log that it will update its security tools to remove the Sony rootkit. This will include the aptly named “Malicious Software Removal Tool” (next release, in December) as well as Windows Defender and the online component of Windows Live Safety Center, as well as the ongoing AntiSpyware beta.
We Say: Really, all security vendors should add this support, if they haven’t already. For Sony, it’s bad enough for detection to be added to antivirus tools from Symantec, Computer Associates, Sophos, etc., but to be added to the Malicious Software Removal Tool? I think the name of the tool says it all.
