Is Dell Quietly Selling AMD CPUs?

By Michael Santo

I first saw a story about someone finding AMD CPUs for sale at Dell’s website over the weekend, but after doing a little research I wasn’t sure it was big news or a non-story. More on that later.

What I’ve noticed is that, while the first reports were at smaller sites, such as PC Perspective, X-bit Labs and TechSpot, more and more media sites have picked it up, including large ones such as TheStreet.com and News.com.

Here’s where I did some research. I discovered that this isn’t the first time AMD CPUs have shown up on Dell’s site, as this Geek.com news item from 2004 shows. I’m not sure if the CPUs have been on Dell’s site since then, or disappeared and reappeared (more than once?). Maybe someone else knows.

We Say: It appears Dell is only selling CPUs at this time. AMD has made some big gains in retail sales (which means, unfortunately, no direct sales = no Dell) in October and September, and I for one would love to see an AMD CPU in a Dell box. I think a lot of people feel that way. Is this the beginning, or a non-story?
