EMI: No Rootkits for Us

Taking advantage of an competitor’s weakness, the EMI Group, one of the world’s largest recording companies, today stated that, unlike Sony, it does not use rootkits in its products … despite the fact, of course, that Sony’s 3rd party copy protection provider says that the software is not a rootkit.
“The content-protection software that we’re using can be easily uninstalled with a standard uninstaller that comes on the disc. EMI is not using any software that hides traces of the program. There is no ‘rootkit’ behavior, and there are no processes left running in the background,” said an EMI spokesman in a statement. Source: News.com.
Interestingly, this addresses not one, but two points: the Sony software has no uninstaller, and the rootkit features of the software itself.
We Say: The industry is thinking “Sony’s down, let’s start kicking them”. It’s great that EMI does not use rootkits. It’s great that they have an uninstaller. Wouldn’t it be even better if they didn’t have copy protection at all (yes, I know that’s a dream)?
