Lectures, the Podcasting Way

By Michael Santo

OK, OK, that’s a little extreme. There’s still something about seeing a lecture live, but Stanford University has launched a pilot program, called Stanford on iTunes. You can download podcasts of lectures you miss.

Stanford is not the first to distribute content to students in this way. Duke was actually the first, when in fall 2004 it gave 1600 iPods filled with orientation materials to freshmen. However, Stanford is the first to provide materials for public distribution.

Content from the Stanford program is accessible to anyone free of charge. Interestingly, that may be no more than a happy coincidence: Vargas said Stanford on iTunes is really about providing the university with an easy and inexpensive way to distribute all manner of content to its 180,000 alumni in 151 countries. We Say: What’s particularly interesting is not just that the program is free, but that it is available to anyone. Other universities, such as the University of Washington are also starting programs to podcast lectures. This can only be a good thing. On the other hand, I remember when I was in college (and admittedly, it was a long time ago) people used to advertise services to take notes … for a fee, of course. Once again, technology has removed another niche job.

Doesn’t seem like I can get to anything without infecting my system with itunes. They couldn’t have just stuck an RSS feed on the site, I suppose.
